it really depends on how many lines you have in the water. if your on a cattle boat like i am theyll come right up to the surface. it just depends how many you bring up at once. the more you bring up the closer they get. last night we started at 600ft within a 15 minutes we had them from 30-210 majority of squid hanging out in the 100ft range.

Where do you store them whole? That is awesome. I want to see a pic. I hope to go out for them soon. How are the weekends on twilight trips?
The boats out here in newport wont let you take them home whole. we had issues in the past where customers would drag ink across the boardwalk. the city wasnt to happy about that and we recieved approximately $5000 worth of fines. All squid must be cleaned now most being filleted, if you choose to keep other parts thats permitted as well.

Let me know the price and I can head out.
40 dollars for the twilight trip, 2 dollars for a gunny sack, 5 for jp entry, 10-20 for a squid jig plus cleaning, galley, etc.

oh yeah as for everyone asking about how these things taste, just like calimari GIVEN you do the following to your fillets. Shave a 16th to 8th inch off of both sides of the fillet. the reason being squid have an open circulatory system the majority of their blood, which is high in urea, circulates through the the outer membranes of the squid. if you dont shave these layers off your left with that funky pissy lemony taste.

another thing to note, avoid fillets which have a lot of yellowish gold spots. were not exactly sure what these spots are but we like to call them "flavor crystals." you can always trim these "crystals" off the pieces you intend to cook.

This is exactly what I do with them. It seems to make them less chewy, too.

These ones go to the bait pile...I'm pretty sure they are parasites. I'm sure cooking will kill them - but I'd rather eat the 'clean' meat.

anybody going today? tonite might be the last good nite before the strom comes. after the storm, fishing usually sucks because the water is really murky.

ok. we got skunked last nite.

there was 6 cattle boats that showed up at newport. 3 boats from dana point, 1 from san pedro, and 2 from newport.

newport boats leave around 7pm or so. it takes them about 20 minutes to get out and into the spot. san pedro boats take about 1.25 hours to get to newport. we would have guess that the newport boats would be fishing starting 7:30 or so.

we arrived on location around 8:30 and stayed extra 30 after all the boats left.

either they caught most of the squid in the first hour or their fish count is way off. i heard the captain of the monte carlo tell the 4 anglers that they didn't do so well. he even stayed extra hour to get the count up. they reported 4 anglers with 35 squid or something like that. i only remember them catching about 3-4 squid.

maybe they did catch most of the squid in the first 30-45 minutes before i got there. or, they are pumping up numbers to get people to come onto the boat. this is the same story for the other boats as well.

to summerize this, i think the sport boats are boosting numbers.

Doesn't surprise me. They bump the numbers in the summer on Cuda catches to fill the boats. Better luck next time.

Sometimes the captain gives rainchecks. When I went out of Danawharf we were skunked and got free passes to come back any weekday.

Does your private charter follow the cattle boats or does he have his own fish finders and equipment? I am just curious is all. What type of range does your buddy have? Have you ever fished the west side of Catalina?
