    Advice: Getting back into hunting

Hey good people. I inherited all of my fathers hunting equipment and it includes a 30-30 lever action rifle. I'm not a new hunter as I grew up hunting with my dad but this fall will be my first time going out as an adult and so I was hoping to get some tips from some seasoned folks.

    1. What are your thoughts about the 30-30? I've been doing some digging and have heard mostly positive things.

    2. non-lead ammunition to harvest big game was not a thing growing up and I understand that now it is. I'm hoping to get some recommendations on brand and grain for deer, bear and boar.

    3. Any tips for me i'm open to.

    Thank you all.

Does it have a scope? Public land hunting opportunities are tough and you want every advantage.

Yep, Barnes TSX or TTSX for 30-30. 150gr and I use 33.0gr Win 748 powder with a mag primer. What powders do you have?

I've shot a bunch of different lead free 30-30, all of it performed just fine. Currently I have a bunch of 140?g Federal copper projectiles I loaded for my hunting 30-30.

If you're comfortable with that rifle, it will work just fine for most stuff you'll be after that you don't need a shotgun for.

Steel shot is required with any hunting now

steel shot is NOT required for hunting now. For a shotgun non-lead shot which often is steel but there are others that work also.
For rifle/pistol a non-lead bullet is required. I am not aware of any steel bullets that are legal as they do not expand. Copper or copper alloy is the common ones. Hunting bullets must be the expanding type. I think there is an exception or shooting varmints --BUT I am not sure and they are a bad idea most the time.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I remember reading online that the 30-30 cartridge, ballistics wise,
                  is similar to the 7.62x39?

For hunting with 7.62x39 out a 16 inch barrel, I think maximum effective hunting range considereding bullet drop, decrease in foot pounds of energy, and velocity; keep it within 150 yards? 200 yards can done; but not recommended? Would this be the same for 30-30 as well?

                    My thoughts….

#1. .30-30 is a great deer and pig rifle. Successful hits can be made out to 200 yards, but that rifle is better served for shorter distances.
#2. Take it out and practice. Sight it in.
#3. Stop reading about the gun and caliber and “just do it already.” Take it out and go! People over analyze things that don’t need to be over analyzed. Just Enjoy it.
