    Alabama Whitetail Hunt

Going on a Whitetail hunt in mid southern Alabama in January

This is supposed to be a hunt during the rut. Outfitter wants us to bring grunt calls, scent stuff, camo clothes (even though we are in a blind) Do we need to bring all that crap? Or if we don?t, is that something they can use to say we scared off the deer?

Sorry, I?ve just never used any of that crap. Are whitetail different than mule deer and blacktail?

Whitetail are definitely a lot easier to hunt and much dumber. They can be patterned very easily.

They are very spooky but get dumb during the rut.

Calling them works plus messing with their scrapes. Find a well attended scrape take your boot and move dirt around then pee in it. I will also make a slightly bigger scrap near the other one. Then I'll use doe piss on my fake scrape. Also hang a little doe piss in a tree to really carry the scent.

      Rattling works too....

The worst part is sitting in a deer stand, it's not only cold but boring as hell. Pocket warmers, rubber boots, sleeping bag, and electric socks help fight the cold sitting.

      Good luck!
One life so don't blow it......Always die with your boots on!

I was kind of worried about the boring as hell part

I?m so accustomed to either riding the ATV to another spot and hiking a few miles to cover ground.

They said cell service is pretty good so I?ll bring an IPad and watch TV

I just sat in a blind from 2 PM until 6 PM. I had one spike whitetail buck walk up to within 25 yards of me. Our rut peaked in the middle of November although we will get another one about the end of December for any does that didn't catch in November.

I have doe in heat, scent pads at 100 yards and 160 yards in different directions but I've never seen a buck react to one.

We will be hunting the peak of the rut down there.

Your scent is only really gonna be a problem if you are archery hunting. If the breeze is right they won't pick you up 100 yards away, they surely will if they catch your wind, but they'll be dumb if rutting. The biggest oldest bucks will be more wary.

My direct experience when archery hunting out of a blind is that a whitetail will wind you in about a 30 yard bubble around the blind almost no matter what the wind, and definitely farther downwind. The biggest bucks will stay out of arrow range altogether if they get your wind.

I have been archery hunting whitetails out of a blind the last 3 years. Whitetails can smell 100 times better than a dog can. I have tried the doe urine trick with no discernible luck. The sprays don't work either but I still use them anyway. You'll be way better off alone in a blind, the more people the more smell.

Next year I am going to use a ladder stand in hopes that it improves the smell situation. I hunt a creek bottom where the wind swirls a lot and I have had a hard time with the biggest bucks winding me. I did get one real nice one this year after about 25+ hours sitting the blind

Good luck. Never been to Alabama, would love to go myself someday

Yeah - they are stupid, and easily found and killed.

So, if I come up empty, I guess the pressure is on

I?m on a roll right now. My last 4 hunts, deer, elk, pronghorn and deer were all successful.

Yes. You're using an outfitter so presumably on private property. If you strike out you should hang your head in shame, give up hunting, and sell all your gear.

Private land white tails are even stupider than the ones that bump into you on public land.

I can?t give up hunting, no way!

The only reason I hunt is to save the poor plants that those bastards eat with no regard for plant life. PLM! Plants lives matter
