    Bear Hunting

Any tips on bear hunting? I was thinking about picking up a tag and heading to D6, X8, or any zone in the vicinity. Are they found more so in the mountains or in the foothills?

and hope you do not get busted by the game warden. Baiting is illegal in Calif. But that does work in states where it is legal

Bear hunting isn’t very fruitful IME. Quite a few do fall to deer hunters, but actually targeting bear without dogs is low percentage hunting. Rather nocturnal and live in the heavy stuff

They are out " THERE ." All of the bear we saw in Calaveras County years back was just suddenly there is a bear, and always gone right away, except the cubs. Mama is usually nearby when you see cubs. Without the stimulus items ( ILLEGAL ) to get them to where you want them its not very good for even seeing one.

Get out and hike, get high to watch meadows and old burn areas. There is an abundance of bears. Be very careful to not take a sow with cubs.

Take a deer tag with you for sure also they stink. If you smell a rotten skunk in dense berries make sure you have a round chambered and the safety off.
People run dogs in D6 ILLEGALLY! I have a nice meadow with water and good cover if you want it pm me. I will never return to the land of fake titts and real A holes.

There are piles of bear in that area d-5 will probably have better luck . Glass burn scars in the am and timber cruise in heavy cover during the mid day . Remember each bear eats on average 22 fawns a year. It’s your duty as a deer hunter to help manage the bear population

It's ok if they are in your possesion and you are eating them slowly. The Bear will still smell them and come in

If you got to shoot a bear, make it an ugly one.

Bears are pretty cute. Especially eating donuts

Sloth bears are uglier than a hat full of A holes.

Hard to find without paying admission to a zoo though.

There has been only a hand full of times I can remember when I didn't see a bear while deer hunting in CA. Yet....I've only killed one bear and that was back in the 70's. I've tried the meat and I like it about as much as I like antelope....or not at all. I own dogs and a bear rug or mount wouldn't last about five minutes - if that long. Being on a county F&W Commission, I'm aware of all the F&W steps, rules and laws a successful bear must go through to get his bear legally taken care of. BUT......I'm also aware that one dead bear probably saves a half dozen or more fawns every spring. If I found someone who would take the meat (I'd even pay to have it processed), I'd probably kill one. By the way, I do buy a bear tag every year. Two years ago I had three bears walk by my deer blind before 9am opening day of deer season. Don't bother telling me that I'm preparing and cooking bear meat the wrong way. I know what I like and what I don't, and bear meat falls into the category of eating road kill skunks!
