    17 HMR for Coyotes

Who uses it or has used it? I have one and after that my next gun up is my 270 vanguard. I figured I'd ask here rather than google b/c any idiot can say anything on the web and figured you guys won't bull**** as much

I have not used one but have seen some people use them. I think they will do the job but I personally would not use less than a .223. If you place your shot right with th right load you should do fine. Too bad there is no lead free for the 17HMR yet. If you want to sell it let me know I have been looking for a long time.

Kudos on the 2k post. I have no intension of selling it as I pair it with my 10/22 to make a nice rimfire pair. When my job situation firms up I'll finish my ar varmint/yote build. Thinking about the 20" coyote upper from RRA or something just like it.

PC - When do you use a shotgun for coyotes? Like in a heavy cover situation where you have a very small opening such as like a 50 yard wide meadow? The area around my inlaws property is very thick due to a big fire that went through in 92.

I use it mainly in brushy area and the desert floor where I am forced to. I would love to get an over under 223/12ga.

I killed a coyote at about 80 yards with my 17hmr I was using 20gr ammo.I put 2 into him and he died. Would i do it again maybe if I can call them in close and get a head shot.it can be done but a bigger gun is better.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

For Coyotes I think you will be better served by a light varmint load in the 270. I personally do not shoot a 270 but if I were to use a 17 HMR on a cayot I'd make the effort to get some powder burns on it's hide by the hears. If you do not reload, yet, I would highly recomend you do, the 270 is a very versatile cartridge and you will enjoy it a lot more when you tailor it to your fun needs.

Like PCH said, a 17HMR will do the job if placed properly! My buddy & I occasionally use a TC single shot in 17HMR and I have seen yotes drop in their tracks, run a few yards then drop & roll a few times and even seen em run about 100 yards til they drop. All with a decent lung shot. Our best results, without using a big caliber round, comes with .223 & 22-250 rounds! (55-60gr)

I love the .17hmr for small varmints, but i wouldn't feel ethical using on a Coyote past 100 yards. I have seen it used on one once, and it did the job, but wouldn't use it if I didn't have to.
If it was all I had, then i'd use it...but I have too many other guns to choose the smallest.

I have seen 22lr do the job. Last time i was out in nevada a kid was using a sweet bolt action 17hmr for them. It worked great for him. I dont think i would have a problem using it, if its what I had. Depends how the yotes are where you live. Up north my buddies use 223 and even than have had some crazy ones run for hundreds of yards before going down.

What really works good for me is the 243 loaded with 58,65 Vmax bullets.I reload them mild I hunt on farm land and houses are only a few miles away.I like how the vmax dumps it energy in the animal and basically disintegrates with out not exit.

I shot one with a .22 right behind the shoulder at 50 yards and it dropped him in his tracks. I dont like risking wounding animals anymore though so I use what is needed for that terrain.
