Black Bellied Whistling Tree Ducks Video

I live near New Orleans Louisiana. Black Bellied Whistling Tree ducks are all over our area near a park by my house. A few months ago I shot some video of them lined up on the bank of a drainage canal. You should be able to hear them whistling in the video as a drive by. They are there by the thousands. They love living in the suburbs.

I have been trying for the last few years to get Tree Ducks added to the limit of the special teal season in September. We see more of them during the teal season than we do in the big duck season. Unfortunately the USFWS bureaucracy could care less about what goes on in the field and will not allow it to happen despite tree duck numbers increasing substantially over the last ten years.

USFW is lame about regional management we have been trying to up the sprig limit in the pacific flyway for years .. we even offered to drop mallard limits as a concession. But no .. btw perching ducks are extra cool , but why are they on the ground lined up like honkers eating grass ?

They are great! There are two different kinds.

        I use this call.

Black bellied and fulvous are what we shoot in Mexico.

What duck makes a whistling sound in flight? I thought wood ducks produced that sound with their wings, or is it the mallard.

They eat on the ground as other ducks do and puddles of water. The don't sit in duck ponds as most duck do preferring to be on hard ground. They do get in water occasionally.

You can hear them whistling in the video. I don't know why they like it here but they do. There are grain elevators on the Mississippi river and they love eating grain that spills into the river and the batture. They are there by the thousands and are a pest to the grain companies.

What I do know it is time for us coonasses to thin them out some. Just have to get the USFWS bureaucracy to give us the green light.

They whistle. A lot of whistling ducks out there. Widgeon and pintails make beautiful sounds.

Goldeneye whistle as they fly because of their wings.
