Any Pheasant hunters?

Anyone go this season? If so where? and how many have you shot? Also if you hunt with a dog? (might sound like a dumb question butttttt)
Ive hunted quite a bit this yr and have been surprised by the number of guys I have seen hunting with out a dog... it boggles my mind

I've been out the my young son for 6 good trips to date and we have taken 28 birds so far. No dog for us but on two morning trips we did hunt with a guy that had a dog. The rest of the time it was just the two of us. Mostly hunting in the upper sacramento valley area.


Not the best picture, but the only one without a kid's face in it. Wed. after opener, 3 of us hunted that day.

Ya when I lived in Stockton, but the only pheasants in SoCal cost around $60 a bird Dumb *** pheasant farm.

I've hunted pheasants in SoCal.
At San Jacinto Wildlife Area.
No dog, hunt by myslef generally.
In 5 days out there, I've bagged one.
Felt pretty happy about that too.
Odds are real low out there, but I've seen pheasants almost every time.

I've been out twice this season so far. Both times have been at Raahauges Pheasant Club in Norco / Chino. It's a little pricey, but it's worth every penny! You can't beat a day of pheasant hunting that's only 20 minutes from your home! My pop and I went out the day after the season opener, and again the day after Thanksgiving this year.

At our Thanksgiving hunt, we took 5 roosters, 4 hens, and 1 chukkar.

Oh yeah. We always take a dog! The dog and handler that we take with us make a great team! The most fun part of the day is when field crossover comes around. We walk the field that someone else just hunted for two hours, and usually flush an additional 2-3 birds! I can't imagine not having a dog sometimes. There are so many birds that you could practically step on and not find them if it wasn't for the dog.

Why do they let you shoot hens? Are they planting them as well??

Only been shooting three times this season, but I'm training a young dog and usually work him on live birds (no shooting) three or four times a week.

Dog training with live birds is almost as much fun as actual hunting!

Yeah. The club provides a mix of hens and roosters. I'm not sure of the details, as it's my father's company that has the membership. You basically get an allocation of birds that they deliver to the fields when you show up. And they usually give you a 50/50 split between hens and roosters.

I have to agree with that. Half the fun of a hunt is watching the dogs work!
