    Leupold vs Vortex or others

Need to buy a new scope for a backup pig gun. It will be a Savage 30-06. That part is set.

I have always put Leupold glass on my guns and been happy with it. It seems to me that when I put my eye behind a Leupold scope, everything in the field of view is immediately visible, even at 9x magnification.

Some of my friends have various Vortex scopes on their rifles, and when I shoot them, eye placement behind the scope seems super critical, to where I cant usually see a whole sight picture unless my eye is in the one PERFECT position behind the recticle. In spite of this, these shooters, who I respect greatly, continue to buy Vortex scopes.

Disclaimer: I have always used 3-9 Leupolds, and these Vortex scopes are 14-24x at max. So I haven't been comparing apples to apples. Hence my questions in this thread.

Im planning to put a Leupold 4.5-14 vx3i on this gun. Is there any reason to do something different?

Shots on game will be limited to ~250 yards. I wont be adjusting elevation in the field.

Go with what you know and trust.

Although Leopold is definitely no longer front of the pack for my go-to. Short on features I want, and no better quality than several others now.

Why a long range scope on a gun used for 250 yards shots? 3-9 Leupold would be my choice. You stated you are happy with the Leupold you have. Just buy another one. Keep things simple.

You know what to do... you've been doing it already.

If you can swing it, step up to HD glass.

And 14-24x is too much scope for hog hunting due to the reduced FOV. Your 3x9 is a good setup.

Nothing wrong with Vortex. I have a Vortex on one of my rifles. I also have six Leupolds on my other hunting rifles. I find the eye relief better on the Leupold.

Like others have said, I have plenty of both and would stick to what I feel more comfortable with.

Leupold vx3i 3.5-10 is what I would pick

Leupold and they had the 1st lifetime warranty. Also one that you do not need to be the original owner. No other manufacture has a "better" warranty. Most that have lifetime warranty just copied the Leupold one to try and compete with them and act like it is a new thing
Get the VX3i 3.5X10X40 Non-AO duplex reticle. This takes the place of the old 3X9X40 scopes and has better glass. Sight it in 2.75" high at 100 yards and hold on the animal for meat in the freezer.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I completely disagree with your warranty statement. Vortex has a better warranty by far. Leupold will only warranty anything electronic for three years. Red dots, illuminated scopes, rangefinders etc. Vortex forever warranties ALL those items.

I like Leupold scopes better for hunting though. I agree with OP that they just seem to line up more natural to your face.

No need for more than X9 for pigs. Actually, I killed most of my pigs with fixed X6 Nikon.
If you are happy with something, why to fix.
On the same note, I have both. Vortex Diamondback is great for what you are going to do with it, but do not buy their 4X12 scope. 3-9 is much better for some reason and yes, I had both of them, so I could compare.

deckhand mike-- I was talking about scopes and not other electronic things. I was talking about normal scopes and not ones with electronics. When Leupold started the lifetime warranty there was not al of the others made and especially for hunting in general.
So when talking about a hunting scope(or ones that should be used for hunting) Leupold had the 1st warranty--hell they were making (with lifetime warranty) scope before Vortex/Nikon and such even were in the scope business. I know nikon gave up and and no longer is in the scope business.
