A .25acp is all one needs. Simply shoot your hunting partner in the knee and start running. The bear won't get YOU that way.

In Alaska they are "called" Brown Bear if they are within 60mi of salt water and called" Grizzly if further inland.
The coastal Bears tend to be larger.
Same critter and best observed from a distance.

Good luck on your hunt OP.

If you do have a bear charge you shoot to break his shoulders first, don't go for the kill shot first. After it's dead spray it with hot sauce to cover your arse!

Your 2 options are the SAME caliber. ----.308 dia. They are 2 different cartridges. 30-06 and 308win.
That said either will work. Bullet construction and placement is the key
I own both, it truly is splitting hairs and I do bring my .308 for almost all my trips... but since he has both why give up 200-ish lbs of energy when you have the chance for an elk? Just my take on it. Other than possibly a slightly faster followup shot perhaps, .308 doesn't offer anything over the -06 IMO.

But yeah, a quality bullet and a lung shot and it's going down.

I’d take the gun that you shoot the best and weighs the least.

With lighter 150gr bullets they are almost equal, once you go to a 165gr or above the 30-06 becomes your best option. For elk, I’d take the 30-06.

I would opt for the 06’. Are you hunting with a guide, friends, or on your own?

With a guide or friends, one can watch the others back while field dressing, etc. Just make sure you actually cover that person’s 6!

Just food for thought. This dude skipped a 180 grain NP off this sows dome and it still mauled the **** out of his buddy. Luckily he got another shot through the vitals as it was bouncing up and down on his friend. I can’t find the follow up article but they interviewed them both in the hospital and they went over the attack in a lot more detail.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers reported a bear attack Friday evening in the Eureka Summit area near Gunsight Mountain. Two hunters were looking for moose when they happened upon a grizzly sow with two large cubs. The sow attacked one of the hunters, causing serious injuries to his head, torso, and legs, but the second hunter had […]

.30-06 has a slight edge, especially when using heavy for caliber loads. However, if you're going to only carry a single load, just compare that specific load in both chamberings and see which has the higher velocity. If the velocity difference is negligible, go with the .308 because it's a short action and can theoretically be reloaded faster.

Also, the S&W 629 .44 mag is a sweet gun

If you have an 870, get a 16 barrel and load up with slugs.
                            There's your sidearm.

Finally, wise words, slugs are the best in this situation, the question is, do you want to lug 2 guns?

All grizzlies are brown bears but not all brown bears are grizzlies. Hope that clears it up
