    Nor. Cal. pig hunt.

Is anybody interested in a group pig hunt around Clear Lake? Fee is arround $300 per hunter, and you are 90% guarantee a shot at a pig. I was thinking about 5 people group (I can pick you up if you live close to hwy-5 hwy-20 going from Sacramento). I am going to hunt that place on the 20th and give you full report if interested.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....

Will a 223 drop a pig? Once I finish building this rifle I might be interested.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.

            Re:

I don't know all the legalities, but I would suggest something in larger caliber. I use .280 Remington, 160 grains. Those critters are very hard-skined. 7.62 Nato/308 will do just fine. The kill needs to be humain, one shot, one kill. You will need CA hunting license and pig tag to hunt.

OK I'll bring the M1A. I'll wait for your report. Any idea of what the shooting distance will be?

Should get youself a hunting rifle, unless you wanna shoot with irons. Which ever is fine. I think 223 is illegal to hunt with if I am not mistaken.

The best way to practice for hunting pigs with a .223 or .308 is to practice climbing trees ! Seriously though, do let me know how things go on the 20th because I've got a nice Winchester .30-06 bolt rifle I recently sighted in and a pig tag. I'm also putting together some cash for a Browning BAR hunting rifle so I've got an auto-loader in my arsonnel... I may opt to go for .300 WSM on that one though. The great thing about the Browning BAR is that they're now making them in aircraft grade aluminum so your whole rig can weigh less than 7 lbs in the field. And in the field weight is everything.

Cali pigs are friggin' tough!!! Even when I am using my .30-06 I won't use anything less than 180 grain bullets. Those suckers don't go down easy.

No, its legal. Any centerfire round is legal....but "should" you use it? Nope. DFG has a chart for game size and minimum reccomended rounds, IIRC for a piggie above 90 lbs its a .243.........

Is that the shop just outside of Upper Lake? I've driven past there before on a few occasions to visit my Dad. Never been in though.

I'd be interested in a round 2 hunt following the report. I might also be able to talk my dad into coming along for some pork, so any discount for a party of 2? Thanks.

Wild hogs are not bulletproof and under most conditions are certainly not dangerous. But they are more strongly constructed and are tougher, pound for pound, than any deer. They also have thick hides underlain by layers of fat, so they rarely leave good blood trails. And they do have the capability to turn the tables if you make a mistake--especially if you have to follow a wounded pig into the thick stuff. It isn't common, but every year our local hospitals stitch up hunters whose encounters have been a little too close. The best way to avoid trouble is to shoot straight, use enough gun and use a tough bullet that will absolutely penetrate. "Enough gun" doesn't mean a cannon. I like the various .35 calibers from .358 Win. up through .35 Whelen and .350 Rem. Mag., but the .270s, 7mms, and .30 calibers are just fine if mated with a bullet designed to penetrate: Nosler Partition, Barnes X, Winchester Fail Safe, Swift A-Frame.
Found this on a California Hog Hunting site.

If waterfowl season wasn't in full swing I'd definitely be joining ya. The Clear Lake area is a fantastic spot to hunt pigs and there's some good public land spots there as well. On private land though at this time of year a kill is almost a done deal up there. I'm looking forward to your report.
