Seems to be a rash of hunting accidents these last few days..

Last sunday a 11 yr old was shot in the face by another kid that was pheasant hunting with him on the feather river. Lots of surgery later (10 hrs), the youth is recovering but he lost his sight in his left eye.

Then yesterday a guy shot his toes off at Delevan Refuge. Seems that he was heading back to his vehicle and his gun slipped out of his hands. He grabbed it but hit the trigger when doing so. Seems to be a lot of mishandling issues here!!

You know as well as I do, while I hate hearing about these things- EVERYTHing but the lid(s) will be blamed rather than placing the blame where it belongs. The parents will get it, the refuge will, the gun makers, etc; when as you pointed out both certainly seem like end user issues- not anybody before them.

Good grief I hope they're ok......

Here the other week I was walking down this dirt road and of course their were these red, white and green flad hunters there. They didn't speak english. Wouldn't listen when you yelled but they seemed to be having a great time quail hunting, shooting across the road and where ever else they felt like. I was about to grab the .308 and give them a quick english lesson on 12 gauge is shorter range and .308 can get you from long range . I guess what pissed me off more was that a few calls were made about them shooting over the road and at people and no one would come out, what is the deal with that???

Then, Sir, we will give them the bayonet! (Stonewall Jackson's reply to Colonel B.E. Bee when he reported that the enemy were beating them back. At the first battle of Bull Run, July 1861)

The most interesting accident I ever heard about happened during Turkey season a number of years ago. One hunter was using diaprham mouth calls and for some reason decided to use a red bandana to wipe his mouth. He successfully called another hunter who proceeded to shoot him when he saw the red bandana.

moral of the story: don't look like game animals while you're hunting. Always carry decoys in bags.

There is a video used in Hunter's Safety class that depicts that very subject. Guy hiding behind a tree making calls and wiping his mouth every so often with the red bandanna... You see another nervous hunter walking up and then "Noooooooo" bang. Also in same series - same narrator who looks like the guy from Airplane! - A kid shoots his foot while crossing a stream and slips off a log in winter time.

I think the video's depict the most common ND's that happen to emphasize what you should not do.

The big comment was that they were all avoidable and would not have happened if the 4 basic rules were adhered to.

HAHAHA yeah I saw the video too! But I had heard of red bandana incidents before watching the video. If you ask me Turkey hunters are just demented psychos who get turkey fever and lose control. I've heard of people getting their decoys shot by other turkey hunters.
