First thing to clarify is, do you have a actual ccw permit with your county? If so, it will be up to your IA on if you can carry standard cap mags, mine specifically put out notice that they do not.

If all that is meet and understood, no need for non-lead for strictly self defense while hunting.

Open carry and you don’t need copper ammo but it’s such a good idea to carry it instead of lead to avoid any hassle. A single box of copper will last you years of sidearm protection.

"Your question relates to California Penal Code (PC), sections 25400 and 25850. Although section 25400 generally prohibits carrying a concealed firearm, there is an exemption that applies to hunters. Section 25640 provides that section 25400 “does not apply to, or affect, licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition.”

Similarly, section 25850 generally prohibits carrying a loaded firearm “on the person or in a vehicle while in any public place or on any public street in an incorporated city or in any public place or on any public street in a prohibited area of unincorporated territory.” However, section 26040 includes a hunting exemption. This section provides, “Nothing in section 25850 shall prevent any person from carrying a loaded firearm in an area within an incorporated city while engaged in hunting, provided that the hunting at that place and time is not prohibited by the city council.”

These exemptions do not apply to individuals who are otherwise prohibited from possessing firearms. Be sure to comply with any restrictions relating to your location, including any rules or ordinances of a land management agency or local government pertaining to firearms. Additionally, it is not lawful to carry a firearm when hunting under an archery-only tag or during some archery-only seasons."

Why even bother ccw a Glock 17? You can actually reach it if you open carry. It’s not like you don’t already have a gun visible.

                huh?

I carry a full size Glock as my CCW rig. No problem with canceling it or getting it into action quickly.

I think open carry is dumb and generated negative views of gun owners....

What state are you located? Where will you be hunting?

Open carry is the gentleman's carry. Concealed is for gamblers and other snakes.

Sure is legal. But I fail to see the point in putting down a functioning rifle or shotgun to pick up a handgun.

If I'm bowhunting during the general season, then I might carry concealed or open. If I expect to see hikers while I'm out, then it's concealed. I carry for protection, not attention.

When I am in the woods hunting I carry OWB with some article of clothing that can be put over it. My rifle will always be the first thing if I need to protect myself from a threat but I do like knowing that I have a pistol at the ready.

It’s different when hunting between multiple layers and a pack with waist straps and a rifle with a sling on. In normal street clothes with a loose fitting outer garment it’s a lot easier to draw. By all means if you really want to ccw go for it. But if the point is a quickly accessible sidearm why bury it under your gear. Just rock it on your hip.

pistol faster and easier to control than the long rifle.
