Anyone ever shoot a limit on Coots?

I was at Yolo Bypass this morning and there were millions of Coots and not a duck in sight. In the blind next to me there was some guy calling like crazy and spooking the ducks. I got bored, I started shooting Coots.

My question is: what kind of person shoots a limit on Coots (25 birds)?

In the summer, a number of farmers in the upper sac valley put on a "Coot Shoot". They have depredation permits to reduce the # of coots eating their rice fields. During these shoots 100s are taken and since they are 1) young ones and 2) been feeding on new rice plants; they are good to eat. Part of the shoot is that the farmer will have the coots cooked up for a feast that evening. It is actually quite good. Now if you tried to eat a "mud hen" late in the season or one that is on brackish water, you will not be able too. Regardless of how hungry you are!

Steel shot is expensive... I'd never waste it on mud ducks.

I love eating coots. Although I don't really roast or clean them whole like ducks. I just breast them and then either grill or deep fry them. If they've been in particularly murky waters deep frying them with some zatarains usually improves things.

What's your favorite way to eat coots?

Don't worry I wasn't using Winchester or anything fancy I was using some old Kent shells. Tell you what though I wish I had been using Winchester 3 1/2 inchers because a flock of geese that flew over me was definitely in range.

If they where in range for the 3 1/2 then they were in range for the 2 3/4 shells as well......(assuming same shot size and velocity)

i would'nt want to shoot a limit of coots. they are fun to shoot for the dogs if nothing else is flying.

i center punched one this morning. it was the first bird i shot. it was a mistake. but there are times that they must die. also where did you hunt today. i went duck hunting today at san jacento. it was slow this morning then it kinda picked up after people left today. shot 5 birds today.

shoot'em for fun maybe, but eating them?!

I remember driving by the sewer plant (huge one) west of Fresno a long time ago and seeing zillions of coots.So eeewww on eating them.
