Tough day quail hunting. The birds were in super coveys (50-75) making it very difficult to get close. Only found maybe 5 coveys and they bolted quick and straight into the trees instead of surrounding brush. Not to mention I brought #8 shot on accident. Brought home a whopping 1 quail. Had I had the right shot I might of got a limit but it would of been tough. I called it an early day after getting something stuck in my brakes making a bit of noise.

Northwest Mojave has great quail hunting, but my reactions to flushing birds were spastic. After 2 days I've got 6 birds.

Went today to all my places, including my property which was filled with quails before the season. Saw so many while deer hunting.

Today 4 hours of walking, driving and what not, did not see a single quail.
I guess they get report that the season have started.

After 2 days, 6 miles, I have one quail, flushed 3 birds, and jumped 3 jackrabbits.

I ended up setting out a trail cam, maybe some quail will show up. I think the predators and storms are the cause for such low numbers, at least in my area.

          The trail cam set:

lots in my yard, they come in for the birdseed the finches knock onto the ground. Can't shoot em here, but it's fun watching our cat stare at them out the window, they're about ten feet from the door.

I've killed a lot with 8's, but 7.5's make them deader. Surely not the difference between 1 and 10 though.

Tough to navigate in the trees? I've done best busting a covey, then keep flanking where the majority went. But ya, you need navigable cover. The more you bust them up, they tighter they'll hold. Ya...near impossible to sneak up on a covey. Them sentries do a good job.

Hunting the South Chimineas unit last weekend, Last year you could barely walk 10 feet without flushing a covey, this year we walked 13 miles and had one covey bust more than 50 feet away

I saw a group of 25-50 (heavy brush so I didn't get a full count) last Saturday here in SOCAL. So they are out there

Been getting limits lately. Much easier with a buddy. Birds don’t know which direction to go.

Nice man! Was pulling photos off the phone last week and found all my pics of the quail hunts. Ever hit that same spot or you find some better places now?

The desert quail populations are abysmal. I see few tracks out at my trail cam sets. I can extrapolate that from those signs in the field, and from the 2 single birds that I've seen searching out others around my place. Seeing those 2 birds was very pleasing.
