    I booked a 7 day fishing trip

on the searcher out of San Diego yesterday.

I've done two 5 days with them in the past, great boat.

I'm hoping to scratch Wahoo off the old bucket list this time.

I love to hunt, keep a bird dog, belong to a pheasant club and covet old firearms but fishing is the reason i will never hunt out of state.

    Any wahooilzilations?

Leaving on 8 day in two weeks. For me, wahoo are nothing special. BFT or grouper taste better.

I'm in San Diego and am in the process of working up to a multi day trip. I caught some yellow fin a couple of years ago on a 3/4 day boat and I've never experienced anything like it. Wahoo and blue fin are on my bucket list.

          Nothing tastes better than grouper,

that was my previous infatuation in the sea of Cortez.

My first trip on the searcher i knew i had beginners luck working for me with regard to bluefin so i studied well before hand and had about 7 schoolies on the deck at the first stop.

A guy can only eat just so much sashimi and after it gets cooked its only good for tuna salad. imo

This Wahoo seems to be a pretty interesting fish,

the speed, the danger, discipline to not set the hook, i'm looking forward to it and that's kind of the deal.

getting your gear together and upgraded as need be and planning for months. (anticipation)

I scored an old truline 7' custom thick wall troller from a barrel at the swap meet sunday.

I've got it all stripped down with a cork tape handle waiting on guides to ship.

Wahoo are insane to catch! There is no mistaking when you hook one up. The reel screams. They bite insanely large yo zuri rigs with no hesitations. Use cable and be prepared to lose several rigs. Even cable is not a sure bet. Eat the wahoo fresh. It does not freeze well.

              It's kind of a catch 22,

On the one hand you wouldn't want to go multi day until you were sure you don't get deathly ill seasick.

But on the other a cattle boat is no real representation of what this kind of fishing should be.

Room to fish (not crowded), a gourmet chef, going where you need to find fish and dare i say it......a different class of clientele?

              Very much better.

              Still,

it's been my experience that after about 4 days you know what you dislike about each and every other person on the boat.

Y' mean there won't be anyone on your boat who'll says, "Hold my beer and watch this!"?

You are welcome to "dare say it". Some people go on fishing (and hunting) trips as an excuse to party. I'm in another group that likes to go on fishing (and hunting) trips to fish or hunt and then just chill at the end of the day with a nice meal and a glass or two of drinkable wine. To each their own.

                      Yeah,

a fathom Ld30 2 came to the door yesterday and iv'e got stainless, carbon and milled aluminum high speed goodies for a Penn 4/0 on the way.

                      That's it,

the discipline to overcome muscle memory.

Every bite will be precious so not blowing it is going to be the concern, it shouldn't be any harder than switching to circle hooks i hope.

                        Spot on,

didn't want to seem like a snob but nothing spoils a much anticipated trip like a degenerate alcoholic or a bunch of "bros" on a road trip to get away from their fat wives.

                        Been there, done that.

Still there is the factor of being confined with a group of people you may not know and it brings out good and bad after a while.

In hunting most of us have the ethic of not being the one to violate the "do not complain in deer camp" rule.

On a boat they call it "that guy", it's pretty funny.

It's as if there was a silent election or something, "there but for the grace of god" eh?

I'm getting the start of that old "stoked" feeling over it.

About the fastest fish in the ocean with a mouthful of razor blades, he has the ability to cut the boat away from anchor, bite through wire leader or open a major artery as you stand there on deck.

The Fathom would be a great bait reel for just about anything they put you on from the Rocks to Thetis Bank. If you can get your 4/0 to run like a Penn Baja Special, I'd use that for jigs and bombs. Wahoo fishing is one of only two occasions where I use mono, so if you're big on spectra straight to fluoro like me, you might want to bring a stock spool of 50# mono to respool at the end of day while at the Rocks. Since this produces more drag through the water for you to crank on, a viable alternative would be spectra to 100# fluoro.

Whether you decide on mono or heavy fluoro, try tying off with a spider hitch, and a double San Diego or Palomar to the jig with one leg of the loop tighter than the other. If wahoo teeth nick the leader, it will be on the tighter leg, and the looser leg is the backup for a second chance at keeping the fish on (and the $20 jig).

My wife and I go on a lot of small group tours, largely because it means someone else does the planning and driving. Some of the people are more memorable (mostly good but some of "that guy or gal") than the sights.
