    Jigmaster drags and salmon reels.

I'm replacing the drags in my Penn 500, do I grease the drags or no? I'm reading conflicting answers on the interwebs but it seems teflon grease on the carbon HT-100 drags is the way to go.

If you were heading out on a cattle boat for salmon, would you take your Penn 209 with 20lb mono, or your Penn 500 with 30lb mono on your 8 foot medium/medium heavy fiber glass rod?

I'd do some Cal's grease on the drags and call it good. For salmon, the reel is probably less important than the rod. Need a rod with a medium/slow action so that you don't rip the hook out. Drag set light, but smooth, hence the greased drags. I'd fish 20 or 25 max fluorocarbon leader.

That's why I'm bringing my glass rod!

That and I'm too cheap to buy a new rod since I was given this one in the mid 90's...

The question about the reels was as much about line weight as anything. The 209 is a level wind and already spooled up with 20lb, the 500 has 30lb on it (and I can't find my spare spool). I know party boats get crowded and being able to horse your fish around can be advantageous. I've never been on a salmon boat before, so heck if I know! (spent plenty of time on rock cod boats however).

If you are trolling I use 40lb with 40 pound fluro. It’s more about dragging the the fish to the boat before the sea lions get it. Salmon are stupid and the commercial guys use crazy heavy line and get bit all day. I have no experience mooching. Watch some videos of salmon trying to bite lures and you can see how “special” they are.

Grease the drag, lose the mono.

                  Monterey.

Given the choice of going to SF or Monterey, I'll choose Monterey every time.

I thought about spooling braid but, again, I'll be on a party boat. It's been a while but I seem to recall people getting pissy about running braid on party boats. It's nice having less drag on the line and less stretch though, especially on deep drops.

Monterey is great. Braid is nice but causes havoc on salmon party boats. Even if you know what your doing someone else causes the chaos. Do ditch the mono leader though and use fluorocarbon for the leader.

Yeah there was some pissy back in the day,

when you get back tell us how many of the group were using braid as opposed to the bitter clingers.

Glass rods and braid with a flouro leader..... no can do trolling behind the boat alongside mono.

I haven't had any problem with that setup mooching with a cannon ball hanging from a rod holder.

If you do change out to braid this is the one i recommend.

Not just that it's such a good quality line but with a metered line (1, 5, and 10 meters) you have the ability to put your offering in the fishes face if the captain calls depth.

Heh, it just turned into a rock/ling trip instead.

So, I'll spool up some braid and a 30ish feet of flouro on top I suppose.

On another note, my poor reels... I apparently never rinsed them after my last trip, never to be shiny again! But I mean hey, not bad for a couple of 26 year old reels.

Check the forecast before you go. It’s been miserable offshore.

30 feet gets pricey in a hurry, think of it as a leader and depending on how you rig (dropper, multiple hooks etc) 3 or 4 feet is more than enough.

The jigmaster 500 is an iconic reel, simple and rugged in it's design, easy to service and clean yourself.

I suggest once they have fallen into poor shape it's time to rebuild.

The aftermarket components available are pretty impressive.
Stainless double dogs, s.s. gear sleeves, fine thread star drags for finer adjustment of drag you can even mag them.
