Coal canyon

I live nearby, access is Very limited. Terrain is steep as hell. Cover is too heavy for quail. I have heard of a few deer being taken over the years by locals.
I’m not even sure you can access it now. I remember hearing they closed it off."Bangarang Peter!" -
Isn't this where one of the massive fires last year was? Might be pretty lifeless.Comment

I used to legally hunt there back in the day, before there was a “chino hills state park” on the entrance side off the 91fwy, into Coal canyon.
Hell, does anyone remember when there used to be a “Coal canyon” freeway on ramp and off ramp on both sides of the 91??? They officially got rid of the signs, markings and designated “ramps” for public access. You can still see unmarked freeway ramps to the canyon but that’s for government access only. Now there’s just a pathway where people walk or ride bikes under the freeway, just to get into the canyon. One used to be able to actually exit the Coal canyon off ramp and drive into the canyon hassle free. Then the Gates came up, then chino hills state park annexed a portion south of the 91 and shrunk the area size of “Coal canyon.”
Second, the place is LOADED with too many people now that use the state park portion you have to go through to get to the reserve. Bicyclists and day hikers everywhere.
Third, you used to be able to access it from the mountain top side (Sierra Peak) too as there is a yellow colored gate with a DFG (DFW) sign on it. I haven’t seen that gate unlocked for vehicle use in more than 25-30 years or so. Hiking down to the bottom was always permissible though, but I don’t know about it’s current status. I haven’t been near that gate now in about 15 years. I’ve moved on to other less restrictive hunting areas.
There’s much better places to hunt without the crowds of people near the bottom of the canyon, by the park boundary.
On a side note, I used to legally dove hunt north and north east of where Green River golf course is and before that was also chino hills state park. I knew the caretaker of the private property up there who gave permission to hunt his land. Dove were like rats up there at times. Now it’s no longer legal to hunt anywhere up there. The SP has gobbled up all that land around there. Sad.
Then again, my hunting buddy’s dad (a retired game warden) used to legally bow hunt for deer in the areas now developed as “Anaheim Hills.” More good times and access gone.Last edited by TrailerparkTrash; 03-30-2018, 2:50 AM.sigpic

Search the forum, there are access problems. Apparently sheriffs write a lot of tickets or something.Comment
