As a surveyor, I have worn a lot of orange over the years. As a hunter, I don't remember ever wearing any orange while hunting. I've never been hassled for my clothing. I've only had a CA hunting license since 1977 so, I might not have put in enough time in the field to run into every warden in the state.

Nope never worn it while hunting. However I will wear it if I'm packing out an animal. Through a set of horns on your back and go walking through the woods. You just may get shot at.

I started hunting in South Dakota, where it is required. Now that I am getting into it here in CA, I do it out of habit.

Especially when hunting upland birds and on public land with other people, I can see the benefit to being more visible to humans with loaded guns who are looking for commotion in the bushes.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

Never wore orange in Ca. Been hunting since 1960. I wear a hat in Wy since some article of clothing is required. Did not wear it in Nev when I use to hunt there. Never been hassled.

I do wear camo and it must work real good because both the bucks and I have not seen each other. The bright spot is it works in Africa and for hogs here

Heck, I don't even wear camo most the time.

Bird hunting at a club, always wear a blaze hat! Not Because it's the law, but because its smart.

                      Turkey hunting, never

Public land hunting, I'll normally wear a blaze orange hat.

I was hunting this past weekend with a friend who was insisting that I need to buy camo pants instead of my coyote BDUs. I told him to google how deer's eyes work.

As to the OP, on public land hunting during deer season, a blaze orange hat is a smart choice. Upland bird and small game hunting, not necessary.

                          My "normal" hunting attire
                          - Wranglers and a button up.
                          - fishing gear in pack
                          - lucky UA sweatshirt
                          - hat

Scent control and approach is way more important than color.

                            This.

I've had antelope and deer walk right past me within rock throwing distance without spotting me while I was wearing 600+ sq. inches of blaze orange. As long as you're not moving, animals will not notice blaze orange. However, if you're moving, it doesn't matter what color or fashionable camo you're wearing - you'll get busted.

Here are hunting accident reports for California by year.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife manages California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public.

Failure to identify target is a common reason.
