Looks like the last week will be cool. I'm hunting all week. Passed up 3 different bucks this morning who were all active, chasing does.

Our camp pulled 3 bucks out this weekend. 2 on Friday and one on Saturday. My little 2x2, cousins 3x3 and other cousins TALL 2x2. Kicked up a nice 4x4 and a wide 3x3. No shot on the 3x3 and we let the 4x4 walk so he can carry on the good genes till next year.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.ProShooter's

He's been around the last 3-4 years and lives in a small footprint down by the creek. The cats near us normally hit the does or fawns. Or come that close to the cabin.
Younger buck had a big body and will taste much better anyway. Can't eat the horns.

I was teaching a CCW class at home and about 1:30 pm on Saturday, a pair of does walked by about 60 yards off with a little 2x3 right behind them. The rut is definitely started around here.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Sometimes its better to take a smaller buck that dosent have as good of genes and let the big guy stick around to better the heard.
The mentality of just "shoot the big one" is not a great way to ensure your going to get to get to keep taking nice bucks every year.

I'm fortunate to have access to well over 1200 acres of land. We try to maintain the heard the best we can.

Actually a good strategy, and what a responsible game manager on private land would do.Our camp pulled 3 bucks out this weekend. 2 on Friday and one on Saturday. A-zone; especially southern A-zone, has absolutely HORRIBLE genetics right now. The majority of bucks are now "Pacific Forks" and will never amount to anything more than a 2x2. Also seeing a lot of very old 2x3s with extremely narrow spreads in southern A-zone. Harvesting the big bodied 2x2s and letting the ones with potential live is a very good strategy; especially if your desired outcome is a good hunt with meat in the freezer.Comment
