Reloaders---Great shell recipe for Doves

Sharing a great load recipe I stumbled on....clean shooting and great performance. Found in the Lyman reloading book.


Hull------Win AA
Primer---Win 209
Wad-----Win AA 1 1/8
Powder--25.5gr 800X
Shot---- 1 1/8oz Lawrence Magnum # 7 1/2
FPS -----1320

I don't handload for SG's, yet, but, you're liking that 800X huh? What's your thought on "Clays" for a load for dove or maybe quail? Same components?

Pennstater.....Don't substitute, repeat, Don't substitute .....I'm sure that you will find recopies for Clays on line by the dozen. Clays is a faster powder and IIR not one that will push 1 1/8oz to the 1300fps mark and still be under the 10,000 pressure mark. I have Red Dot, AA Handicap and 700x and no recopies for such a load

800X was used because I had it, thought I'd give it a go, picked a recipe for 1300fps and started reloading ..... the recipe was all I was hoping for and worked great on the long shots

Field (slower) powders, or light field powders (slower then target powders) will be the best ticket for faster 1 1/8 loads @ 1300fps or more.

EDIT: Powders used for 20ga, 28ga ......are ones that will have fast 1 1/8 recopies available

For off the shelf.....try some of these. select the 1 1/8 1300fps # 7 1/2

OP- I use this same load, and a few variations of it as well. If you use reclaimed shot. You will gain about 30-50 FPS.

Also got a a similar load using the green or gold Remington STS or gold nitro 27 hulls with 28.5 grains of 800X. Fast as hell. Runs in the mid 1400s. I've used it very effectively for dove, but it beats the hell outta my sholder. Great load for chucker.

Disclaimer: These loads produce very high amounts of pressure, and I only use them in my bigger duck guns- Benelli Super Nova, and Franchi Intensity. My buddy shoots them occasionally through his standard 870, and they've yet to cause him any issues.

Actually use it more as of late than the 700X and 800X loads.
