Walking the trail with doggy, and see a doe on one side and a small buck on the other...Grab a dead branch and start rattling/scraping a large bush...small buck stayed in the brush, but this guy popped out behind us about 15 yards...

Not a brag...just thought it was a nice buck...

Guys, trying to get into hunting. Most likely deer or pigs. Was recommended a Savage or Ruger 270 caliber. Any info is appreciated. Hunting buddy would be phenomenal. I live in Sacramento County.

No buck for me this year. But had a great time with my kids and that’s better than any horns. Here is a pic of me and my son glassing

    B1 Zone Bucks

Southern Humboldt county private land this past weekend, it rained on Saturday which really brought them out Sunday morning but my 20 y/o son and I filled our tags on Friday. My son helped his 16 y/o cousin get his buck Sunday morning, a fork, but took the cousin several shots to get on target, it's his second year hunting and buck fever had him jerking the trigger but eventually hitting his fork on the third shot after my son told him to "squeeze the trigger slowly"
    .

    My son's 3x3

    .

    My 4x4

    .

All three tagged and validated by Cal Fire - Howard Station, dropped them off at Bud's Custom Meats in Penngrove yesterday for processing: steaks, Italian sausage, summer sausage, hot links and jerky coming soon

I encourage all my friends on Calguns to shoot as many pigs as you possibly can. They're filthy, dirty, diseased and destructive. Leave the carcasses for the scavengers.

Good dove opener. Not great but good... better than working.

The number of quail was insanity.

Fly fishing UT this summer with my two sons. Not quite the 3 lb I usually get from this blue ribbon fishery but a decent brown and rainbow. Fishing a 5wt with a stimulator dry and a black nymph dropper.

Caught a couple of rainbows today. They aren’t the biggest, but one is wild and they’re from 5,000ft elevation, not some lake trout. The one with the white tipped anal fin and pink meat is the wild one. The fin is usually the give-away, but the color of the meat will also give you a hint. Another thing to notice is the teeth; a stocker has tiny, worthless teeth that are more like 1000 grit sand paper than anything. A wild trout has teeth you can feel, clearly designed to hold and tear.

Trout are closely related to salmon (don’t ask me how close), so their meat is supposed to be pink, not white. A stocker that has spent a full year in the wild will still have white meat, despite munching on bugs instead of fish pellets. I usually don’t keep stockers, but I know that this area has not been stocked in over a year, so he’s been here for some time. He also had a damaged tail and scratch on his side, so I think a bird was picking on him.

The stocker was eating ants and little fliers. The wild one had bits of crawdad and snails in its stomach. This wild rainbow is probably 3+ years old, judging by the size and loss of dark patches. Don’t worry, they already spawned; I saw hundreds of trout up and down that creek.

Both were caught using a 4’6” UL rod with a Bass Pro crappie spinning reel spooled with 2lb test while slinging a small fly around in the trees. The fly was black with a little yellow wire wrapped around it that resembles a bee.

Crappy picture, but it was almost 4lbs. Caught on a 3/4 flipping jig with a widebody craw rigged sideways to imitate a bluegill. Unsure of the bait, but it looked similar to the Googan Bandito bug. Forgot my net so please excuse the sand.

It is my PB at this lake (Hensley Lake).
