    Antler question

I realize that the sale of antlers not found as shed and sectioned for use or used in handicraft may not be sold in kommiefornia (if hunted in kommiefornia).

My question is can a person give away (no money no service nothing changes hands except the antlers) antlers with the skull cap still attached? Does age of item have any bearing?

I am aware that donations may be allowed to certain institutions or groups. But I'm talking a gift between individuals.

Thanks for answering a stupid question. I couldn't find any info about gifts, only sales being prohibito.
    Sorry, not sorry.

You can absolutely gift it. just can't sell it if it was taken with a hunting license.

I'd also like to expand on jmonte's reply. You can't sell antlers attached to skull plates if they were found as dead heads either. You have to cut them from the skull plate first.

Someone should tell this to Craig's List. Go on it and look at all the mounted deer and elk heads, as well as mounted antlers that are for sale in CA. With the exception of a few of my largest elk and deer antlers and mounts, I gave all the others away to a friend who is making them into lamps and furniture. They were gathering dust and cobwebs hanging in the garage.

F&G cracks down on this. I recall an episode of wild justice where they busted a guy for trying to buy a bear rug from a warden.

I almost bought a trophy big horn sheep skull from some guy in the santa cruz mountains once. It was being sold on craigslist and we went back and forth in email a bit. He wanted a bit too much for it. This was back in 2009 when I moved to CA from a free state and didn't even consider it being illegal. Now, imagine I bought it and got stopped crossing the border. Lacey Act, felony. How is the average person supposed to know that?

I firmly believe antlers and skull plates should be legal to sell. Selling meat and organs should understandably have some regulation. I don't think there is a big market for full mounts and antlers on skull plates. I believe the big underground game market is meat, bear gallbladders, other organs used for Asian medicine.

What if the sheep was taken at Big Horn Canyon Ranch nick? Does that matter?

Thanks for all the replies and good info folks.

They are not being sold but are being given away. Fortunately I will probably be one of the beneficiaries!

                Sorry, not sorry.

The animals taken at Big Horn and others that are NOT wild animals with seasons listed such as deer/wild hogs/elk and such are really just livestock and you can do whatever you like with them. That is my understanding. Just like killing/butchering a ranchers sheep/pig/cow/buff. In reality that is all they are----Livestock.
Just like the 2 sheep I brought back for Bitterwater Outfitters today. It was a fun, enjoyable trip. I will do a write-up later on it but would/will do it again.......maybe for a Yak.

That sounds like a good time. What the heck does yak taste like? I'm looking forward to the write up.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.
