    Lead free .22 ammo ??'s

Hey everyone, I live between here (my home state) and arizona (school) and was curious what you guys will be doing about the lead ban for .22 ammo, the only manufacturer I know of it is winchester and I like to hunt ground squirrels pretty often, as well as squirrels, rabbits etc. Is there no exemption for .22 ammo for hunting? It seems like there is no way to get lead-free for .22 in this state and damn hard to find it out of state. Is there any legal argument going on against AB711?

    thanks,

    Adam

CCI makes some quality lead free ammo. Think its call TNT.

I've used the Winchester Varmint LF (tin bullet I believe). Not as accurate as a lead bullet in my experience but I did take 3 cottontail and a ground squirrel one morning with my sons Savage Rascal.

There is no exception. If you are hunting on CDFW lands you must use non-lead right now. If you are hunting off of CDFW lands you will have to switch by 2019.

I've not used the lead free .22, but I hear it's crap. For me, I'll just switch to an air rifle, or otherwise change my method of take (I'm good with a bow, I like shotguns, etc.)

I won't use it. I'll take the ticket. .22lr should have been exempted. You can't get the same knockdown power and accuracy out of that cartridge with lead free.

How about we keep the lead and ban the CA DFW??? At least the lead is the least toxic of the two

There is, but the gun community is so divided that it doesnt stand a chance. We get emails and calls all the time about the 10 day wait and semi auto ban but no one wants to hear about ammo restriction. Then come to the gun community itself and nonhunter but shooters could careless about hunters. Nonlead doesnt apply to them so it doesnt hurt them, at least not now. Sad but true.

It's pretty sad that the people who make these laws have no idea about the effect on us hunters. Try walking into Walmart and asking for lead free 22lr ammo... Or 80% of local mom and pop gun shops, I have never seen the CCI TNT ammo as mentioned above before on a store shelf. I guess the reason the .17 cal rifles are so popular with varmint hunters has something to do with this I'm betting.

The only lead free in .22 long rifle is the Winchester 36 grain tin ammo, and the new CCI Copper-22 ammunition (I don't think the latter is out yet).

The Winchester LF ammo is decent in some guns, but terrible in others, probably best for shooting within 75 yards.

The CCI LF ammo will be strictly a short-range round (based on their "Short-Range Green" ammo performance).

The lead free TNT ammo discussed is their .22 Magnum ammunition.

Hornady makes some really accurate lead free .22 Magnum ammo, but it has not been manufactured since the ammo "crisis" began.

I have the winchester tin ammo and would never use it to hunt with.
Not accurate enough to constantly put shots in the kill zone.

I guess wounding small game is less damaging than reintroducing an inert metal into its natural environment.
