    It Was a Good Weekend

So last weekend my wife and I flew to Texas for my annual hunt with my son. Normally the wife doesn't go but my son was bringing the Daughter in Law and my new granddaughter also, so wife wanted to make the trip. Tex Jr. also brought his Mother in law and his Brother in law so pretty much the whole fam damily was there. (except ex-wife )

We flew in to Dallas, Thursday evening with the rifles (I brought an extra for the BIL) and pistols. Glad to report no issues in either San Diego or Dallas. Got the rent car and then drove the 3 1/2 hours to the ranch. It's in between Lubbock and Abilene.

Slept in Friday since we got there at 2am in the morning and killed time until the evening hunt. we let the BIL put 10 rounds through the 30-06 to get use to it and to also make sure no issues with zero.

Headed out to the blind around 3:30 and got all settled in. 4:45 rolls around and I see a 10 pointer start walking through the brush. He wasn't a trophy by any means but he wasn't so small I wouldn't put him in the freezer. Let him leave though just in case there was something bigger coming. Guess what -- There wasn't anything else showing so when that idiot walked back out 30 minutes later it was time to put some meat in the freezer. Down he went.

Waited for Jr. to come by and pick me up and then we took him back to the house and proceeded to process him. After not having processed a deer in two years and working by the headlight of the car we spent the next 2 hours skinning and quartering up the meat.

Got finished and the venison chili that the wife cooked was ready so had some dinner and then went to bed.

Got up the next morning and headed back to the blinds. I sat and watched 4 good size does for 30 minutes trying to decide if I should shoot on or not. As I'm deciding I hear my son shoot over in his blind and I could tell it was a hit. Texted him and he said he got a buck.

Of course the does ran off when they heard the shot but i didn't really mind. So about 10 minutes after they ran off, I heard my son shoot again. Yep, the stupid does walked right up to the downed buck so my son decided that he needed company.

At that point we text the daughter in law (she was in a blind with her brother) that when she was ready to come get me and then we'd go pick up jr. She drives over we toss the deer into the truck and then head back to the ranch.

As we pull off the road right before we get back to the house I look over in the field and there are two deer. We tell the BIL to jump out and get him one. He jumps the fence (It's ranch property) and from a standing position blows the neck out of a smaller spike. Don't know if it was skill or luck but didn't matter it was effective.

Throw this one in the truck and drive the remaining 200 yards to the house and get to work on the processing. After processing the one the night before and since it's obviously daylight, I'm a little faster so we managed to get everything processed in 2 1/2 hours.

I opted not to hunt the evening so I and the wife took care of the granddaughter while everyone else went out. Luckily no one saw anything worth shooting as I was not looking forward to cleaning anymore, plus we were running out of space in the coolers.

Slept in the next morning and then backed up and headed back to dallas for the plane ride back. My son and the rest of the clan drove back to Denver. He texted me Monday morning and said we had just over 225 lbs of meat. Looking forward to Xmas when I go into Denver and pick up some of the meat.

All in all a good weekend. Already planning next years hunt.

Very nice! Congrats on showing the family a good time. What rifle were you shooting? What bullet did you use?
Its an expensive hobby, but more expensive when you try and convince yourself you don't need what you really want.

Good work! That is awesome. I've been considering trying a Texas hunt in the next year or so.

Do you know the ranch owner or do you pay to hunt there?

The Ranch is owned by my ex father in laws company. My son and he were close so I still get the invites

I shoot a Rem. 7mm mag . For hunting I like the core loct 150 gr. Seems to work. I also have the 3006 and a 308 as options. Most shots we end up taking are at 200 yds and less.

No pics as these were all smaller than what we have taken in the past.
