Lots of dragging if you knock down two of them. Shoot a cow or calf instead of that bull, much better eating. I've got 2 elk tags this season to, I'm not sure I could put 2 elk in the game freezer but I'll pass over that bridge when I come to it. A friend and I took a short drive right after filling our limits of trout at the lake and saw 2 cows down in a pasture a couple of miles up the road toward Grant. There's 1,000 head already stacked into another ranch just south of town 5 miles out. Some 300+ bulls are still trying to call cows away to cover. We had some fires here and rain after so the new growth has already brought some deer and elk into them. Saw 3 small bucks and about 25 or so does in a mile in a area I hunt. Maybe it's going to be a good year this year all over the Rockies. I start smoking rainbow trout tomorrow afternoon, those 6 fish we caught today fill a 2-2 1/2 gallon bowl of chunks to smoke. After they are done the wife will can them all for Christmas gifts to a couple of friends in Calif. Good luck and be safe.

No dragging as we have access to horses, atv's, toboggans and a few strong backs. I gave up trying to drag elk a long time ago. I'm hearing that the rut started late and in fact, bulls are still rutting and bugling in our area. Let's hope everyone is successful this well this year. P.S. I have a large freezer and lots of friends who like elk meat! Good luck on your hunt.

I need to do a CO elk hunt. Been talking about it for a long time but the only time we are ever there, its church business... no time to scout or relax.

No. My father went for bow and got shutout. Super hot conditions delayed and/or eliminated almost all rut activity.

The wife and I had cow elk tags in mid September here in NV. We were surprised that the rut was just starting. We didn't start hearing bugles until a week into the season. We filled our tags though.

Saw many nice 6x6 bulls near Rico & Lizard Head during the recent archery season. They were in groups & not chasing cows? Didn't bugle much and it was very dry to stalk within bow range. Good luck to you all with rifle tags.

No I live in SoCal, but have family in CO. Saw lots of elk from Dolores to Telluride near the highway early mornings.

Went muzzle loader season. Saw one bull running through the trees. That was it. Never been hunting before and had never seen any sign till this trip. Still had a boat load of fun. Here are some pics.
