Colorado elk season is finally upon us.

4 more days till i and many others will be out in the woods trying to fill our freezers with delicious elk meat. I can already smell that musty sweet barnyard like smell as you come up on a group of elk. Anyone else going for first season rifle?

Good luck guys and be safe, I've been benched this season. Hopefully I'll be able to make it out next fall.
Until then I'll live vicariously through your postings.
We'll just give them the 'ol number 6.

No. My father went for bow and got shutout. Super hot conditions delayed and/or eliminated almost all rut activity.

Sorry to hear. Did you go with him on his hunt?

I had heard through a few friends in colorado the the rut is just now getting under full swing, later than normal this year, and there is a new moon out next tuesday, should keep the elk out later in the mornings. Might be a good trip, you never know.

My hunting partner is going to hunt first season with his family. We're hunting third season together for the first time, we usually go back for second season. I cooked up some elk skirt steak stir-fry last night. So good!! Can't wait for some elk tartare.

Hope you have a good hunt and safe travels. Best of luck on tagging out!
Its an expensive hobby, but more expensive when you try and convince yourself you don't need what you really want.

I heard about the same conditions from a good friend. He settled for a cow elk on the last hour of the last day of his trip. All I know is I have some nice steaks headed my way.

My group and I are hunting the 3rd season. From what I'm hearing from our outfitter (Tom Tucker), there are more elk in the area right now than he has seen in 15 years or so. Four or five mild winters coupled with an elk harvest not meeting the goals set by CO F&W mean that there are more elk roaming around Meeker than the state would like to see. So, I'm doubling down my odds and have bought a cow tag and will pick up a bull tag upon arrival. While I'd like to fill both tags (who wouldn't), I'd be happy with filling one. I've got a group of friends headed out tomorrow morning for the 1st season in Meeker. Amazingly, there are still more than 200 over the counter cow tags available for the 3rd season.

No I did not go. New job this year = no out of state trips.
