Elk Hunter Killed in NV....Too Close To Home!

There was an elk hunter killed last Friday in Elko, NV. He was shot by another hunter who failed to clear his chamber of his 30.06 and then placed it in the back seat of the truck and the trigger was inadvertently pulled. The rifle went off, and the bullet went through the opposite door and the bullet struck the other hunter in the chest, no doubt killing him instantly. The guy that was killed is the cousin of my office receptionist.

This is a preventable accident. Please remind those in your hunting party to not only remove the magazine (or to unload the rifle), but to also make sure that the chamber is CLEAR before placing it in the vehicle! It could save someone's life.

One last point, this past weekend when I was deer hunting I noticed that another group in the campground had leaned several rifles up against the side rear door of their truck. I don't know if those rifles were unloaded, but the wind was blowing and it wouldn't take much to have one or both rifle fall to the ground with a possible discharge. While I don't like butting into other hunters business, I did ask them to properly secure the rifles for their sake and my own. Be safe Calgunners!

We're not supposed to judge all Muslims by the acts of a few "crazies".
But the acts of a few American "crazies" is enough to judge all Americans who own guns.

I was taught about guns and safety by my dad and the CA hunter Safety program....

I thought I was safe until I started taking classes... now I see all sorts of bad handling and habits from a lot of shooters...

I also keep a CATS tourniquet in many range / shooting bags....

They will not do anything for a chest shot with a rifle designed to take down an elk... but I always show those who I shoot with the IFAK, open it up and explain what is in there....

Later when they sweep someone or their own body part... I can be "That Guy" and say something childish like... when you shoot your own foot, I am going to charge you for a new tourniquet too... and they look at me strange and I will say, you are resting the muzzle of your rifle on your foot....

      ... I digress...

I guess the hunting regs in NV of unloaded chambers in the vehicle are there for a reason
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
      (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

When me, my daughters and our hunting buddies are out and about, we always make sure to remind each other to unload or check chamber. Anybody, even the most seasoned hunter can forget to unload. We even keep empty chamber when climbing up and or down steep terrain. That's whats so great about bolt action, you can easily and quietly chamber a round.

99.9% of hunting accidents are as simple as muzzle control. If someone has a A/D and the muzzle is where it's supposed to be, no one is hurt and a very scary lesson learned. Otherwise, we read about things that forever change peoples lives.

Sorry to hear of such an accident.
Thanks for the reminder to watch what is going on when we are in the field
The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back

Very sad and God bless all but how about leaving the bolt open? Just my take and it's ok to call out unsafe behavior.

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

I might add if you lean or set a loaded firearm on a truck/atv/car etc you can/will be cited by the fish and tree huggers dept people. We have had them try several times but the firearms were unloaded so they could not. Another person I know was cited.

Very sad to hear. I know a few guys that had negligent discharges while hunting(they think its funny). its safe to say i hunt and prefer hunting alone.

Very sad news. It is unfortunitely, a good reminder that safety is always first. Living with negligence like that would be unimaginable.
