Hunting Small Game with Pellet Gun in LA?

    Hello

I went over the regulations, it says you can hunt small game with pistol, archery, rifle etc, except in LA county.

Well does anybody know if that applies to Pellet rifle/bb gun? And if the pellet gun is legal, do you still need lead free pellets?

Sorry I looked it up and it seems you just cant hunt any small game unless its a shotgun or archery. But I don't see how pellet guns could be considered a firearm. So Im confused a lil.

All I wanna do is take my sons hunting for squirrel or rabbit with a pellet gun. I am license hunter but they are only 8yrs old. I looked up regs but sometimes a bit confusing.

Any help would be appreciated. Im sure I will have to drive out of LA county to hunt with them but Id prefer to hunt locally D-11 if I can.

    Thanks guys/gals

In many cities, air guns are treated like real guns.
L.A. (and Eagle Rock) are included in this.
    No discharge allowed.

I would have to disagree with that. Discharging an airgun in LA City isn't the same as discharging a firearm.

Disagree all you want but, it is the exact same violation no matter if it is a Daisy Red Ryder or a 50BMG rifle.

If your case gets to the DA for review you don't think they will see a difference between discharging a 50 BMG vs. an airgun?

It's the same exact crime. What the DA decides to do isn't the issue. The fact is it discharging an airgun is the exact same crime as discharging a firearm.

Has been for years. Probably was that way prior to paintball guns hitting the market.

It's not even just the city that would screw you. DFW would then proceed to screw you as well for some type of violation as well. Sucks, I know. I have Eurasian doves crawling all over my house but I'm in city limits up where I'm at.

Now, let's answer the OP's question. For small game see reg 311 (method of take) and you'll find the answer:

                  (f) Air rifles powered by compressed air or gas and
used with any caliber of pellet, except that wild
turkey may only be taken with a pellet that is at
                  least 0.177 caliber;

I read that but it also says the following. So are they considering air rifle a rifle because I don't. lol

•(f) Air rifles powered by compressed air or gas and used with any caliber of pellet, except that wild turkey may only be taken with a pellet that is at least 0.177 caliber.
•(g) In addition to the methods listed in (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) and (f) above, firearm rifles and pistols may be used for taking rabbits and squirrels only; except in Los Angeles County where rifles and pistols may not be used.
