    Off the yak!

Well my amazing summer of vacations and fun is finally coming to and end because of budgetary constraints. So until I start work again I can't spend $50 on gas and $25 for bait so much. So I busted out the kayak for some yellows.

I caught bait pretty easily and trolled them around about 3 to 4 miles offshore. My only greenback got killed by a grab and release hit, so I hooked on a spanish mack and 15 minutes later the the clicker started screaming. I put the reel in strike, set the hook, and it was game on. This guy was 16 pounds.

Twenty minutes later, my line starts buzzin and I had a big one hooked. I fought it for a good 10 minutes or more (it took a bunch of runs) and finally landed it. It was 22 pounds, weighed on the beach.

I paddled about 10 miles round trip. That was BRUTAL, but it paid off.

    That's awesome
I wish we has Yellow Tail in Nor. Cal. to chase with the kayaks
How do you like the Chirp FF on your kayak??
The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

They didn't but the fish yesterday ran straight down it seemed like. This kayak is also massive. I'm sure it would have pulled me a mile in my old 10 foot 20 pound kayak haha.

It's so sweet. I use a $1200 unit on my boat, but it's like 15 years old and I'm about the put a new transducer on there and use this unit instead of the old one. Technology has improved so much.

It gives super clean arches of fish and pictures of baitfish schools. And I go up the coast to lingcod fish every month, so the downscan mode is awesome. It's so helpful to see the bottom in depth.

To me using a kayak in the ocean would be to scary for me what if a great white decided to take a bite out of it.Have you ever seen sharks while you are out there?

I'm not too worried about Sharks. I've never seen them on the kayak, but a lot of guys do. I'm surprised I didn't see one yesterday because I bled two huge fish way out in the ocean.

I see sharks all the time off the boat tho. At the beginning of July, I was fishing in between point Loma and the 9 and saw a shark doing the "jaws" swim. With his dorsal and caudal fins out of the water, slowly swimming along. I brought the boat right next to him, close enough to touch before he darted away. It was a good size shark, probably 7-8 feet. That was a really cool experience.

I'm more worried about the ocean just being the ocean. Winds, waves, cold water, and anything else Mother Nature can throw at you.

But believe me, I would MUCH rather fish off of a boat than a kayak haha.

I try to fish the central coast every month for lings, and I'm always nervous until I go out on the first day and I can settle my nerves. Winds get strong there and the water is so cold that if by the small chance your yak goes down, it's too cold to swim in before hypothermia kicks in (I don't wear a wetsuit). There's also sharks and thick fog that can roll in. I just play it safe and be smart. I bring a vhf, life jacket, handheld compass in case my gps goes out, plenty of water/snacks, and a super soaker gun to use as a bilge if I take on water.

Everyone should have respect for the ocean, if they don't, they'll belong to ol Davy Jones.

Yaa I have a old Garmin on the boat but I think it's time to retire that. The chirp is really nice and gives a super clean image.

What do you target off the kayak?
