Hunters in the San Luis Obispo area?

New hunter looking for good people to head into the woods with. This would be my first trip actually. Hoping to make it this season or next. looking to go to Los Padres Nat Park. I'm very experienced with firearms and shooting as well as ethics and hunting in a theoretical sense, but have not ventured into hunting other than squirrels and what not. Definitely looking to learn. My main desire here is to network and share knowledge and experience

If you have not hunted except for squirrels how can you "share knowledge and experience" when you have none??

Actually I am just ribbing you and hope you find someone to help you out.
I loved SLO and went to Cal Poly in the 1970's. It was a great place and I have many fond memories from there including some hunting and a bunch of scuba/free diving.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Hunting around here kinda sucks. FHL is the best bet if your serious. Better fishing and diving in this area.

OP, I used to live there. I tried to find partners online too, but in reality hunters are very protective and the reality of someone taking you out is very low. I never got any bites from anyone with experience. I did hunt once with a guy who had less experience than I did at the time.

The point in telling you that is to encourage you to just get out there. Hunting there is very good for upland game. Los padres and the Carrizo Plains are a great place to start for upland. There are plenty of quail if you can find a little water on maps and don't mind busting through thick brush. Since you're new, my honest opinion is to not even worry about trying for pig and deer. Just get out there exploring and shooting quail this fall. You will start to notice more sign of big game and you'll know when the time is right to really spend your time hunting those.

I ended up just going out on my own and figuring it out. Turns out that to this day I still hunt solo 90% of the time and I like it. It's easier to actually get out and not wait on someone who didn't wake up in time.

Just get out there and start exploring!

Well I wasn't trying to indicate I had experience to share as of yet. That is just an aim and endeavor I have throughout my hunting "career" if you will. I love the thought of taking the skills and experience passed down from other senior hunters who are nice enough to take me under their wing, and pay it forward by doing the same sometime down the line. Slo is a nice area, just wish everything wasn't so expensive here!

That seems to be pretty sound advice. Very much appreciated. Having my first child, a son here in a couple months so my time will be limited . My hope is to someday live in a place, and have the required skills to put a decent amount of food on the tablefor my family via hunting, but I know that is pretty lofty and will definitely take a lot of work. Hoping to move out somewhere near Montana or Washington, anywhere outside kommifornia really. Thank you again for the words of wisdom.

I'll probably regret this but we can go quail hunting this fall if your really like walking around with a gun and not shooting anything. I got no good spots, no dog and only mon/tue off.

Well you might not have to regret anything haha. My son is due to be born in late October, and I was just looking at our classes/Dr visit schedule.. Good Lord, I'm gonna be busy for a while. And if I do get some time free, I'm not positive the wife will be too keen on me taking that time to hunt. Looks more and more like I'll be waiting till next season. The offer is very much appreciated though. For now I guess I'll just keep practicing on the skeet shooting.
