Well it's raining outside in Sunny Southern California so I figured it was a good time to sit down and enjoy a beer and create a blog entry from my morning scouting efforts. By the time I am done I will have hopefully enjoyed two or three beers and entertained someone.
I met up with a friend of mine "Paul" who just moved to San Diego recently, I wanted to take him out and show him around to some areas with-in the D16 hunting zone. We were planning on focusing our efforts around the Palomar Mountain area in the Cleveland National Forest. My other goal was to take my dog "Kane" who is a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy of 5 Months out for his first adventure into the wilderness.
We met at "Wallyworld" at around 4:30AM and hit the road, at around 5:15AM we made it to the entrance road to the National Forest and got our bino's out and prepared to scour the hills for CA Bucks! After about 5 minutes of driving we stopped to glass a hillside that had burned about three years ago, we did not see anything but as we got back in the truck and creeped forward we jumped 4 Doe's and watched them scatter across the hillside. We then continued on and reached another burnt hillside and saw 2 Doe's to the left and then scanned to the right and there was a Doe and and 2 Fawns. After watching them for a few minutes we continued on and saw a young Buck with about 4in. spikes, he was not much for hanging out; Once he saw us he was on his way into the hills. About another mile up the road we jumped another young buck with probably 3in. spikes, he was quick across the road but we were able to get a good enough glimpse of him to see his spikes.
After about 7 miles of travel on the fire road we pulled over to enjoy some the scenery and let Kane out to do get some fresh mountain air. 15 minutes or so went by and we decided to continue on as looking across the valley the weather was beginning to move in and we could hear thunder in the distance. As soon as we got back in the truck the rain began and we could to see lightning in close proximity. At this point we decided it was time to make our way down the mountain before the lightning got any worse. However during our decent down the mountain the lightning picked and man we got a show. I have not seen lightning in some time and that was cool. I don't care how young or old you are lightning is "****ing Awesome", it's as awesome as Apache helicopters and nothing is cooler than Apache helicopters. Can you name that movie?
Overall we saw a decent amount of deer for D16 but unfortunately we were not able to get out and really do any hiking or true scouting. Any day in "The Great Outdoors" is better than being cooped up inside the house.
