Kayak is your friend. The best fishing in SLO is from one. The halibut and rockfish are right close to shore. Spooners, lefingwell, willow creek all good places to launch.

When bumming rides on a boat offer to pay ALL the fuel, ice, etc. That is the pretty standard deal. The boat owner pays a fortune in maintenance already.

Thanks for the input Deckhandmike, I will gladly pay ALL of the fuel and related costs.

My wife and I had touring kayaks a few years ago that I had to give up due to back issues. There was something about the sitting position in kayaks that pissed my lower back off. If I don't get any takers from this post I'll head to Morro Bay and rent one to see if it's still an issue.

      Thanks again Mike

You could get by around here on a smaller skiff for cheap. My buddies 14' aluminum has done just fine.

Fishreports.net is the forum the local guys use. Look under port San Luis reports. Best place to find a ride.

Like Mike said, kayaking is good. They make these super nice seats for kayaks now that should feel fine on your back.

And if that's not a possibility, try buying a small aluminum boat or dinghy that you can do beach launches from and launch out of leffingwell. I was recently there and saw some guy doing it easy with a 12 footer. He said he uses his friends 15 footer as well. I think his boat only had like a 25hp outboard or less on it.

You don't need a big boat because you can fish so close to the launch.

Finding strangers to get rides with can be tough so I'd try one of these options.

If you can afford it, I would deffinetly do the Striper. That boat is awesome.

Plus, you can launch out of Morro with it and head north or south. That boat can get you anywhere you need to go in nasty conditions.

For a pig trade I can work something out. I got a buddy with a sweet 40' boat that will trade a private charter out of Morro Bay for a day of hunting. The captain and I have worked together for years commercial and sport fishing and he's my main hunting buddy. Pm me.
