So I have wanted to get into handgun hunting, but lead free ammo isn't very available for many calibers, including .460 Rowland which I intend to use. With the law stipulating that ammo must be expanding, and yet not lead, what can be used? Off the shelf lead free .460 is on the light side(185 grains), and larger HP lead free bullets all state 'not for use in ACP'. I would assume that means Rowland also. It seems that there is just not enough case space for the big HP copper bullets to load properly? Is there a good answer? Or is there a chance that the law may be adjusted in terms of the expanding ammo requirement? It seems that without the hollowpoint there are solid bullets in a decent weight that could fit the case. Solid hardcast lead is excellent. I don't see why solid copper should be excluded, since it is required.

When using copper a lighter than typical bullet for caliber is chosen, takes more velocity for copper bullets to expand correctly.
Barnes has copper bullets in 200, 225, 250, 275 grain in .451.
Cutting edge has a 240 grain bullet.
Most these were intended for use in 454 or 460, the 225 for the Colt.
Your Rowland was never interned to be a hunting handgun.

And is an awesome guy. I'd be looking at the 225 colt bullet, or the 200 grain XPB bullet. I don't know if the 225 would feed, and the 200 grain will not expand, but it is an "expanding bullet". You just can't shoot it fast enough to expand.
Still makes a 45 caliber hole in whatever you shoot. In fact, probably two.Comment
