    Central Coast Kayak Fishing Report

My central coast fishing trip was great. The plan was to fish Monday through Thursday, but my friend was having boat problems the whole trip so we had to come home on Wednesday after I fished the AM session. The majority of the trip was to target lingcod. There's not a ton of them here in SD so we thought it would be fun to try them up the coast.

We stopped in Santa Barbara at Refugio state beach on Monday to try to for Calico bass but didn't have much luck. We got some small fish but nothing special. It was funny because we were there the day before the oil spill. I was thinking that I would be pretty confused if the water started turning black underneath me because of an underwater pipeline burst. I'd probably call it in to the coast guard on the radio and hurry in haha. After that, we drove up to Los Osos area and set up camp and headed out Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, I brought two lings into the boat and lost one while trying to net it. I also had a couple unhook while reeling them in because of a poor hookset. It's because my swimbait was ruined and I was too lazy to change it out so it kept sliding up over the hook and barely hooking the fish.

On Wednesday, we went 20 miles north and did some kelp fishing. I got my limit on lings by 12-12:30.

The people up there were really nice. I met a bunch of people out in the water and it was really cool that they were so welcoming to a San Diego boy fishing their waters.

This is definitely a trip I plan on doing again soon.

I also got a good whale watching experience. A HUGE gray whale or humpback (I don't know much about whales) kept surfacing about 15 feet from me. And the day before they were breaching within a quarter mile from me. So I was kind of scared it would breach and land on me haha. Pretty amazing sight tho.

Love the Halloween swim bait! Nice ling! Was that spooners or leffingwell? We had a guy die a few years back due to a breaching whale. We stay clear of them when possible. If it was breaching most likely humpback.

Awesome! I miss it there. Glad you had success on the spots. Big swimbaits are a lot of fun to target lings.

Yaa it was cool how versatile they were. I caught a bunch casting and retrieving while keeping the lure right next to the bottom, a few jigging off the bottom, and even got one while just letting it the swim by itself. I just dropped it down, brought it couple feet off the bottom, let the current wiggle its tail. Got hit after 30 seconds.

And I owe a big shoutout to Standish on this website, he helped me plan the entire trip. Spots, ling techniques/lures, and even safety tips. It deffinetly led to a successful trip.

Sounds like a good time. I really like them because they target lings so well. No screwing around with catching little black and yellows and whatever else is hungry in the ocean.... which is everything.

Did you end up making it out to that kelp out past the left side I was talking about? Or just fish the structuring along the way?

Exactly! I drove all this way to target lings and that's what I was catching.

And yaa I fished outside the cove on the south side. There actually wasn't any visible kelp tho. I think it all broke off and wasn't all the way grown to the surface yet.

                    Cool report. Thanks for sharing!

Looks like you need a recipe for some fish tacos this weekend!
Its an expensive hobby, but more expensive when you try and convince yourself you don't need what you really want.
