Unregulated shooting + camping areas (Southern California)

Hi all - I've been a lurker on these forums for the past year or so but just bought a 12-gauge and am really excited to get started

I'm looking to do an overnight camping trip somewhere in southern california with a friend and we were thinking of taking a few guns to target shoot somewhere in the backcountry. Does anyone know of a good BLM area with nice scenery for camping, good hiking, but also a good backstop to do an hour or two of target shooting?

Check out blm.gov. There's lots of info on where camping and shooting are ok and there's tons of maps available. That's going to be the best way to be sure the area you are looking at is ok. When out there be cautious of wandering/driving onto Wilderness land. No vehicles are allowed on it, it's only open to hiking and horseback.

Thanks for the link. I've been staring at the map for a good 5 minutes but still don't know where to find the unregulated areas for shooting. Is there an option I can select on the map to show areas that we can target shoot?

Also, I remember purchasing a map at Bass Pro a few years ago.

A lot of BLM has restrictions do drought. Call the BLM to see if the spot you chose is ok.

Great - I plan to call BLM tomorrow morning, though we'll be leaving for the trip at the same time. Doing some last minute planning

Are there any areas that you know of in SoCal (or near the Sierras) that I can look into that have unregulated areas? Any fav spots of the forum? I'll be sure to call their BLM office in the morning

Stanislaus National Forest has great places. Big part is unregulated allowing free shooting. Some parts are protected and marked as such.

After doing some more research, this is an excellent suggestion. If only it were closer to SoCal (I will definitely mark this one for a future trip as it has all the ingredients we'd be looking for!)

yep, the place is a bit far from SoCal. I am not familiar with SoCal area.

There is plenty of open areas up here in the Owens Valley.
