Big Bear & Idyllwild have a ton of trails to hike. How difficult do you want your hikes to be?

Mt San Jacinto. some of the best hiking in SoCal.
you gotta do your own leg work and find your routes, but its well worth it.
there is more than one trail that goes from the desert floor (sea level) all the way up to the peak (10,800ish ft)...however, i should warn you that it is advanced level only.
If you suck with irons you will suck with optics. The difference is the aimpoint will allow you to suck faster and a scope will give you a closer look at how much you suck.
AR's have finally become full blown "men's barbie dolls" now with fashion accessories.

I made this for San Jacinto a few years ago. It's patterned after something similar the Forest Service puts out for the San Gorgonio Wilderness:

Gratuitous panorama looking south from the flank of Mt San Jacinto:

BTW, the San Gorgonio Wilderness is one of the best kept secrets in SoCal. I don't know why, but all summer people drive right past it so they can drive another three hours to hike in the Sierra Nevada. More info:

          Gratuitous wilderness panorama:

Most of the hikes in OC itself I consider training hikes, and aside from those by the ocean, I normally don't bother except for the cold months.

Here's a gratuitous panorama of the view of mts San Gorgonio and Mt San Jacinto from the top of Old Saddleback, which is eight miles up the Holy Jim Trail:

If you need any suggestions concerning the San Gabriel Mountains, I have lots of gratuitous panoramas of them too.

              Oh, you're in Long Beach?

Most of these trips were local: https://www.flickr.com/photos/simono...7604589474033/

                  Santa Anita Canyon.
It gets very crowded on the weekends,
If you can get up there during the week, it's great

I second San Gorgonio, permits are easy to get on off times and lots of trails to choose from. Water is hard to find above 9500'.

Ice House Canyon at Mt Baldy is a nice hike. It gets really bad on the weekends so you want to get their before 7am.

Fish Canyon west of San Gabriel canyon is nice if you can get a ride through the mine area to the main trail head. They mine owners really screwed this trail up. I'm sure the city of Duarte help.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
