    Big Bear Camping

I'm thinking of going up to Big Bear this weekend for a little camping/fishing. All the websites say that all the campgrounds are reserved and full. Anyone know if I would have any luck just showing up without a reservation?

    Any input is appreciated.

    Thanks!

I'm pretty sure some of the spots are first come first serve. Getting a spot depends on when your gonna head up there. Friday night or Saturday morning I wouldn't count on it.

Check out "yellow post" camp sites. They are scattered about and are first come first served. Marked with yellow posts. Normally you can have camp fires, But I'm not sure now with the current drought we're in.

yellow post sites are great, we are bringing the girls this time so toilets are a must.

Get a pot-a-potti. Problem solved! (there is a recent thread?) Dispersed camping is much better IMHO. I haven't been in a "paid" campground in over 20+ years.

You need to arrive early for first-come-first-serve campgrounds.
For reserved campgrounds, you might be able to get in on a cancellation or early departures, but you usually have to check with the campground throughout the day.
Also check recreation.gov the day before and day of, to see if there are any online cancellations.

No discharge of firearms is allowed around yellow post campsites when I was on the website. Went to cook creek yellow post campsite during 4th of July weekend. Best place ever! The no campfire rule sucks though

one of my buddies runs an RV rental up there. he drops off a full size RV/toybox at the campsite of your choice and you just show up and enjoy it. no towing, no cleaning, no thing. just camping in style!
me personally, i prefer the tent camping in a secluded part of the forest...i hear enough generators and rv noises when we go to the desert.

For an extra bit of drive time, I prefer to camp in the forest of Kern county. Far less people (if ANY ) in the "yellow post" camp sites. Then I think that if I can drive to Kern, why not go Inyo county???? I love the Sequoia & Sierra Nat'l Forests. San Berdo is just too over populated.

True fact: San Berdo NF is the "most used" or "most populated" NF in the country. Angeles NF comes in 2nd place.
