Where (retail store) can I buy USGS topo maps?

I'm trying to get into doing land navigation with a map and compass but I can't seem to find a retail store who sells quality topographic maps. I know you can order them from the USGS website, but honestly, their website is so terribly designed and cumbersome, I can't stand it.

Also I'd prefer to be able to hold the map in my hands and make sure the landmarks I know are on the maps before I order them. You can view PDFs of the topo maps on the USGS site but it requires you to download a huge .zip file that doesn't even open or view correctly some of the time.

If anyone knows retail chains that sell them or local shops in the Sacramento, Roseville, or Yuba-Sutter areas that offer them, I would greatly appreciate the heads up. Thanks!

Try a large sporting goods store. I saw some in a local one here.

The only sporting goods store I could hit today was the local Big 5 and that was a huge waste of time. I was hoping to get an idea of places in Sac or Roseville I could hit over the long weekend. I know there's the "You can call and ask" route but again, how many people do you think come into sporting goods stores asking for topographic maps. My guess is the average Sports Chalet, Big 5 or Dick's employee doesn't even what they are.

Any idea if REI sells them? They don't carry them on the website from what I saw (at least nothing local) but I haven't been into a location in probably 2 years so I don't know if they carry them in store.

            Topographic Maps

REI has a variety of maps available. I have purchased several maps from them including compasses and they even have classes on how to use both in different areas.

If you are not a member, then it is worth joining.

P.S. Most folks are using GPS unit these days, but knowing how to navigate with a compass is critical because just like other electronic devices GPS units will fail.

              Thanks!

I will make the drive to Roseville to check what they have on hand. I have my eye on a Silva Ranger 515 CL sighting compass, but I don't think they sell that model, but maybe I will luck out. I joined years ago when I bought my first 3-day pack from them but since I live somewhat far away from the nearest store (about an hour) it's been hard to keep in the loop as to what courses they offer.

You might try www.mytopo.com. You can customize your map (map center, scale, etc.) and either print the full resolution image yourself or buy a large version from them printed on waterproof paper.

I would make REI your first stop.

.. you'r going to drive two hours just to see if they have them? umk, sounds like a brilliant approach!

Find your map number/s online and call - if the sales person can't figure it out.. remember that 'ol speak to a supervisor thing?
After watching WTC Bldg #7 being razed, and considering it's main occupants..

I stumbled onto this note while checking advanced weapons..
"911 = false flag. WTC 7 was brought down by demolition. 47 floors came down in 6 1/2 seconds - not hit by a plane. Just one of hundreds of absurdities that occurred that day. Wake up".

I used to buy mine at a surveyors supply shop along Auburn Blvd:

3 yrs ago Mountain Air Sports in Santa Barbara had a topo printer. You could look up and print any map wanted in CA (and more) for around $10. Print was waterproof as well. I'm surprised those aren't around at other places.

REI has maps, but im fairly sure that they are NOT USGS maps. But they are meant for outdoor navigation so they will be all you need. plus they will show trails better. also most of these maps are printed on waterproof paper.

I own a few USGS 1:24000 scale maps, and while they show topographic relief quite well, they are not very practical for navigation (for me personally) as they dont span a very large enough area.

REI is phasing out topos. 1:24000 are the best for hiking/backpacking, CP is wrong, you can never have too much detail, they are the best for any serious work, and especially useful if going off trail or searce and rescue/recovery. If you've got the ducats, Natgeo has a great topo program based on the 1:24 maps. It'll show you point to point, elevation gain or loss, and you can do a 3D overfly of the planned route. PAX
