carrying a sidearm and target shooting in nation forest

I am not sure i am posting this in the right forum. I am going hiking / camping up in the Stanislaus forest by sour grass area. Will it be ok to open carry a pistol while I fish the river. Can I target shoot if it a safe place with an ar. I tried calling the sheriff's office but cant get through.

If you have a fishing license I think you're good on that open carry pistol.

Maybe someone else will chime in..

      re: fishing
If you are fishing in a place that is not a prohibited (for shooting) area, and you have a fishing license, carry at will (by whatever method you see fit).

      re: AR-15 in national forest
If you are not in a prohibited place, fire at will with whatever legal gun you have.

Don't call the sheriff, call the forest service office for the particular national forest you will be in.

I'm very familiar with the area there. You need to be a considerable distance away from the Sour Grass Crossing, as no shooting is allowed down there. There are signs posted, provided they haven't been taken out by the logging trucks. I usually go way back up the forest road up past Rattlesnake Creek, and have never had any issues. Only once have I seen a ranger and all he wanted was to make sure I picked up my brass.

when fishing or hunting you can conceal a handgun. but you actually have to be fishing or hunting. having the license only does not mean it is free game to conceal.

Open carry is legal as long as shooting is allowed in that area
