    a practical ccw day pack?......

I do a lot of backpacking, hiking, fishing & hunting all over the western US. I usually carry when I'm out for animal protection and also the occasional low lifes. (There have been recent incidents of robbery, attempted murder and homicides of hikers and backpackers in areas I like to explore.)

I recently went on a 2 day hike with some buddies out local. During this hike I was by the stream washing my face and wetting my head to cool off not realizing I was next to some berry bushes. I heard some moving around and saw a cub and almost immediately was confronted by momma bear. I was about 15 feet away on opposite sides of the stream when she stood up let out a bone chilling roar stomping down and lunging at me. My pistol is stowed in my pack in a pocket where you need to unzip and remove the pack from the shoulder to gain access to. Through some unexplained grace of god the bear let me back away with my life. What I learned from this experience is that this type of carry is damn useless in a real life situation. If that bear would have charged me I would be dead with no chance of drawing my pistol in time.

So, what I'm wondering is, is there some type of backpack designed for QUICK and EASY access to your firearm? I want a bag that has a compartment where I reach in between my back and the bag through a velcro flap or snap button flap (even a quick zipper flap) that is built into the back pack. If I have to remove the back pack off my shoulder or fumble around in any kind of way than I feel its rendered 100% USELESS... When seconds don't just count but are all you have I need to be able to defend myself instantly. The 5.11 bag is a huge pile of **** in my opinion. Do I need to make my own or has anyone actually produced a practical CCW backpack yet? I can't find one. I am dead set on this type of carry and do not want to wear or add any type of other holster or fanny pack.

I can't carry on my waste or belly band style as I generally hike in board shorts and a light shirt or tank top. The only time I can carry in the normal sense is when I'm hunting, but when I'm hunting I already have a rifle in my hands and usually won't need to draw a side arm for protection. The Blackhawk Diversion bag is on the lines of what I'm talking about, the zipper is a little funky and it doesn't have a chest or waist strap which is not ideal for hiking.

This has the back pocket type in looking for, just want one in a hiking pack form.

    Thanks for the help!

For anyone who has googled this and is looking for the same type of pack I'll list the one I decided on here.

Its the Maxpedition Falcon II hydration pack.

I use a MLD Newt and toss a Ruger LCP in the the Hip Pockets

I have used a Mountain Hardware Fluid Race Pack and a Mountain Smith Swift Lumbar Pack and carried a S&W 686....was in a area with a lot of mountain lions

Also love to use my Zpacks Multipack for carrying

You could day hike with a CCW Vest or light Jacket on and carry one of the bigger mountain smith lumbar packs for your other gear.

DTOM Multi-functional Tactical Pack and Messenger Bag

I haven't purchased this myself, but when I saw your question I instantly thought of a messenger bag. Kind of like a man purse. If you research how a woman would CCW with a purchase it narrows your options, but I think it's the direction you are headed.

You also draw different, which you'll need to practice. Hard to explain without pictures, but the gun concealed in the purse can be fired without even remove it from the bag. You want to be able to remove it from the bag while it is already pointing towards your attacker.

Those are extremely impractical for any type of hiking or backpacking.

Couldn't you just run a holster on your pack's waist strap?

I want everything contained inside my pack. I do not want anything that snags bounces obstructs my vision traps heat in my body or advertises that I'm carrying a weapon.

Well not ccw but I have a zpack that I modified the sleeping pad holder to hold a ar15 pistol.

It is surprisingly concealed and fairly able to quick draw.

Just use that and add a lumbar pack to hold additional gear.
Should be good for 1 to 2 day trips

I think you'll have to make what you want.

Have you tried to draw anything from a pocket locked to you back?
I think it's pretty impossible which is why under-arm rigs exist and what you want doesn't.

If you have the pocket velcroed, you probably won't be able to undo the velcro without taking off your pack. A zipper sounds like it might work, but I hope you put some good padding in there and have something to cover your trigger. There are some nice trigger only "holsters" that come with a lanyard so if you pull the gun out of whatever pocket you put it in, you can secure the lanyard so that the trigger cover comes off as you draw your gun. Some people use this holster in an appendix carry, although I imagine this would be hard to disguise in board shorts.

Also there are some undershirts that come with a "band" type holster for underarm carry.

Of course this assumes you have CCW permit.

If you do carry in your pack you might consider getting copper only bullets...just in case some DA/DFW is digging for charges. Many people don't consider this when carrying in certain areas...it's a hunting thing.

Having a gun concealed and ready at a moments notice but still in the main pack just doesn't make sense to me.

At least the fanny pack won't mess with your board shorts
