Best long sleeve shirts for hot weather

Any recommendations for long sleeve shirts I can wear outdoors (shooting, hiking, etc.) while getting beat on by the sun in high temperatures? I absolutely hate wearing sun block and with my fair Irish skin, it's either that or cover up.

Preferably something that has some UV protection.

Hanes long sleeve T shirts. They are the best. Kept my arms and back pasty white for decades. Use sun block on your hands!

Banana boat makes a spray-on SPF 30 sunscreen. It dries very quickly, almost as soon as it hits your skin. I use it when I play golf, works great on my pale Irish top layer. No greasy hands, just protection from the sun. Try it.

You can usually get it at your local Walgreens/CVS/whatever.

I've a few Columbia long sleeves that are made out a polyester material. They've got their Omni Cool and Omni Shade technologies.

I find that they work well for hiking since they're lightweight and breathe easy. I don't know about the SPF 30 claim with the Omni Shade but I like them. I believe I picked them up for $15 each at the Citadel.

I've been googling a bit and it seems the cotton vs synthetic, polyester for hot weather is like the 9mm vs 45 debate.

+1 for Columbia Omni (not sure, but I thought mine said SPF 50)

I thought that I really scored when I found one on sale in Realtree Xtra camo.

I like the trend in "sports jersey" type long sleeves made with breatheable material...I use a jersey for hiking in hot sunny areas because they tend to be less sweaty and they dry faster than wearing a traditional cotton shirt.

I too use the "omni shade" Columbia shirts and the sun protection is great. They are ultra light weight and breathable. They also sell shirts called like "air gill" or something that my father in law shares by, but they are ultra expensive.

That's similar to what I was talking about. The one's I use are 1/4 zip.

You can find some great deals at the Columbia store at the Citadel and at places like Marshalls.

That zipper one looks a bit thick and heavy on their website, is it? I notice that it says it's for extremely hot and humid environments.

Are you sure yours is a 1/4 zip? The only one i see on their website is 1/2 zip.

i frequently wear thin long sleeved pocket tee-shirts in all sorts of hot weather. being lightweight, they tend not to cling to my body when the temperature rises and i begin to sweat. i get them a bit oversized and can cover my hands with the long sleeves if the sun begins to scorch them, and may roll the sleeves up a bit if it isn't. if the weather is chilly but with a scorching sun, i wear a short sleeved pocket tee-shirt over the long sleeved tee-shirt.

always ensure you are staying hydrated when in extreme heat, or even in marginally hot weather.

I've given up on cotton in hot weather. I use those polyester long sleeve t's for hunting. A slight breeze blows right through and keeps you much more comfortable than cotton.

It's not online; I believe it's been discontinued. Which explains why they were so cheap and in the sale racks.

However the ones you show seem to be similar with a crew neck. I wouldn't hestitate to use them. I've yet to try some of their nicer collared shirts but from handling them, they seem to be nice and lightweight. Give them a try, I'd recommend just about anything from Columbia.

On cotton vs. synthetic, I've worn different undershirt materials when I was in the military. Cotton is cheap and effective but it holds a lot of moisture and will stink. Synthetic materials like those in Under Armor shirts breathe really well and wick away moisture better than cotton but will stink just as bad. I was deployed to the Horn of Africa and worn Under Armor shirts under my uniform. They definitely feel nice when the wind is blowing.
