Shooting on your own private land in Kern County

    Hi All,

Curious, if anyone knows if i'm able to shoot in Kern County.

I'm planning to buy some land there and was hoping i can target shoot.

Searched some old threads, checked some BLM maps (2010), and looks good. Just wanted to confirm. I've already ordered more BLM maps.

Google Map pic attached of the Area.

    thanks!

Id be talking to your realtor. You have one, since you are planning to buy.

I did speak with the sales guy. He said it should be fine. what i'm worried about are the nearby neighbors...they're about 1/2 mile away.

I know Kern is generally cool with target shooting. Just looking some assurance, and more info...if any.

This is the only right person to ask. He will know the local ordinance.

Your real estate agent is the absolute last person to ask.

People in sales who make a commission will say anything to make a sale. I agree with taperxz.

Yes, that's what i figured. the sales guy didn't seem too confident on his reply. However, he did state, he had some land near there (i think he said near there) to do target shooting too.

                Update!

Spoke with Kern County Sheriff Office today, and they've cleared me for target shooting on private land.

However, they noted, that i still need to check with the neighbors.

I totally forgot to obtain info on the deputy whom i spoke with for reference. Will probably do that when i head down there this Thursday.

state law is something like you must be at least 150 feet from houses. but that is for public land shooting IIRC. If it is private land out of city limits, id say your good to go regardless of your neighbors.

I think its 150 yards but check on that.
Borrow a rangefinder and range it, then you are good to go with a suitable backstop. I have been looking at property and the rangefinder goes with me.
