The propane camp stoves are good for vehicle-borne ops, but in a real SHTF or "hard times" scenario, I like to keep a MSR mountain stove in my kit. It will burn anything flammable, and is highly efficient. I had access to kerosene in quantity while on the Kuwait/Iraq border, and one of the MSR containers (it's a liter, I think) would last more than a week, cooking soup and coffee. It weighs about a pound and takes up very little space.
