My parents had this old technique to rippen tomatoes by wrapping them in newspaper. Not sure if it was old world technique or what but it's what they did.

Apples do last for months stored this way, have done that on and off with the apples from our trees for years.

trick is to maintain the right humidity. too much = spoilage, too little = shriveling/spoilage.
IMO its all about humidity and temp control. we used to keep persimmons like that. dont last as long as apples but it works.
