Raiding vs Bugging-In vs Out vs Foraging

It's interesting the differing approaches to survival that are posted here: bugging-in, bugging out, raiding, foraging, etc. Yet some of these approaches appear to be on a collision path.

We have those with BOLs (who say that they'll shoot anything) shooting at other survivalists who bugged-out and are simply crossing their property on their way elsewhere.

We have people who have fully stocked BOLs arriving to find that "raider" survivalists have cleaned them out, or who are still there.

We have those who are foraging for food inadvertantly wandering into someone's bug-out property, who'll shoot anyone.

We have raider survivalists breaking into into abandoned homes, meeting other survivalists face-to-face who plan to bug-in and not be noticed.

These groups may well find themselves in a fire-fight with each other, yet these samep people pleasantly discuss different scenearios here. Ironic how these plans can get us killed by none other than our forum buddies here.

No big conclusion from this, just making an observation.

Honestly I'm not a fan of Rawles books that much but one thing it covered, I thought very well, was handling those encroaching on your BOL. In one case they shot and killed everyone because they found them to be raiders/cannibals and in the very next two cases they took both groups in after detaining them - I found it interesting these parties were so easily detained by the survival group.

Your observations are quite accurate. I cringe when I read a post by someone who simply says they will take from others who prepared as a means to their own. Why not prepare now - yourself - so you don't have too take from someone else who does not deserve your violence or thievery.

And finally I still think this level of doom and gloom is beyond what we will encounter in this life time. I think we're headed down a bad path and it could result in an Argentina / Greek like collapse which will be bad, but ultimately I don't imagine the level of encounters you've noted unless our nation is attacked in some horrible way.

It's no different that "real life".

Good observation OP; I've pondered the same. Luckily, I seem to have a decent group of neighbors that have prepared/stocked to some extent and have contingencies.

Yes, many of us are our own worst enemy.

We haven't even discussed what will happen to all the street gangs who during "normal" times are intimidated by police presence but in a moderate emergency situation will be unhampered by law enforcement presence.

Somebody mentioned before where the street gangs of present are the only ones (excluding military, law enforcement obviously) that are already accustomed to a leadership ladder and will more than likely be the best suited for a societal collapse.

I tend to agree with that and think that the better led gangs will be the new "law" when/if the time comes.

I am concerned with what happens to any water sources in this situation, and the BOL/raiders as described above that decide to grab a hold of a lake will play the game just like you see the crocs in the Animal Planet vids. Just waiting for someone to come along before killing for either territorial reasons, or just for fun.

Is this what I think it is? An OMG thread? Should I post 20 times crapping all over this thread until it gets deleted like someone else I know?

When it hits... Think, the fall of Rome. What happened to Europe. It didn't disappear... We call it the dark ages because we don't know that much about it. As archeologist find more evidence, they find out it was much more civilized than we thought. The biggest issue that we'd deal with is constant warefare as society compartmentalizes into fieifdoms. Something more along the lines of one second after, or whatever it's called. Each area pulling together, creating a fiefdom until someone comes along bigger and badder. Biggest trouble will be from the "Vikings", "Huns" and "Mongols"..... Then again that's more about territoriality. Chaos doesn't reign long.... People naturally seek government of some sort. If anyone thinks theyre readY for that they're lying to themselves.

Neighbors, more specifically, armed neighbors. I think gangs will continue to select the weak and any resistance will put them off, for a while at least...

Water is the big one... That I have no real answer for... I have short-term contingencies for water, but longer term, nothing...

I think with technology and people able to rent and move, we have less of a sense of community than in the Dark Ages . I'll be honest, I know maybe half of the people in my neighborhood and my family is one of maybe 5 that are the original owners. Most of the houses now are rentals with people moving in/out every 6 months to a year. Luckily, I've got a good group of core neighbors who have planted roots in this neighborhood, planned or not, and are here for a while and prepping-minded.

I am planning on bugging in, with occasional foraging/recon trips around abandoned areas.

I will make sure my perimiter is clearly marked for the raiders & foragers...

I think this is what is most important. As part of prepping, band together with like-minded individuals, families, and groups in your local community. If the S really HTF, aside from the general support of a prepping community, the power in numbers will be important to fend of gangs, looters, raiders, etc. And guns, yes, lots of guns.
