    Sobe Bomb

Since I saw it at a campground, I'll post it here.

Anyone ever seen one? Search Sobe Bomb on youtube and you'll see.

Saw my first one this past weekend out near Barstow.

Basically, you poke a hole in a Sobe bottle cap. Put some gas in it and put the cap on somewhat loose.
    Put in campfire.

As the vapor heats up a flare of flame shoots out the hole ~ 8-10 ft high in this case. Eventually, (~30 seconds?) the pressure builds and the cap is blown off with a 50 foot high fireball and mushroom cloud.

Pretty impressive for a stuipid drunken campfire trick.

Now, does this qualify as a destructive device or just a stupid human trick.

I'd say it sounds like a good way to get an injury when you're miles away from help.

I did this stuff with sparkler dust around July 4th. Until I got a piece of glass in my forearm.

We used to use beer bottles and called it a firefountain.

veggie bombs are always fun, too.

For some reason, canned peas always seem to work the best

Was up in the hills above SLO (Cuesta Grade/Los Padres NF) in the early '80's for a peaceful, and alone, Mountainman weekend. A couple of hikers came by late that first night, and I invited them to share my fire and camp until the dawn. They seemed intelligent enough, until one asked what would happen if he put some of my Pyrodex in a soda bottle (still glass back then), capped it and tossed it into the fire. I told him that in about 30 seconds it would detonate and blow glass and flaming debris 100ft all around.

Yeah, while I was "tending nature", the bozo did it. I can only thank God that it was early Spring and everything was damp and green. Both of the hikers took numerous glass frags to the legs and abs, and my truck (about 150ft outside camp) suffered a star on the windshield.

A quick check showed they weren't in any danger of bleeding out, and after patcing them up, I cussed them a goodbye and told them to leave the mountain and my presence. They could make a hospital in a few hours I told them, and I would look for them on the trail in the morning as I went for water, just in case.

Since then, I only share my camp with like-minded hunters, Boy Scout Troops, or Mountainmen, all others are invited to go far away and camp there.

An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero
