      Seems to me that quite a lot of that was 'soft story' damage from garages underneath the houses; land is expensive in SF - not a lot of separate or side-of-the-house garages.

        I agree if your garage is detached or you have a single story ranch type. I was thinking a 2 story with garage underneath (which is what I've got).
