MiOX ... long term personal water purifier

I have been researching long term water purifications solutions. I wanted a system that is small, light weight and last years. A requirement is it must fit in a backpack and not be wasteful.

I looked into Pool shock and Iodine, I hate to say this, but those are only as good as your skills. There are storage concerns, mixture concerns and they do not kill 100% of the threats a person has.

You can not mix pool shock in small quantities. You can only mix up a large batch and then use a small portion to treat water...so unless you want to carry a gallon of bleach with you, the pool shock idea is wasteful for the person on the move. You are wasting 1 gallon of water to make 1/4 cup of solution.

Enter this little baby... I question the use of batteries as a long term solution and strive to avoid batteries...but this is a gem right here. I need to research solar charging CR123s or getting a suitable sub for CR123 power... e making a 6 V DC solar pack.

Enjoy...going to buy one of these today. If you want to read a bunch check this out http://stuff.silverorange.com/archiv...srmioxpurifier These have been out for over 8 years now.

One thing the Mioxx will not do is filter out the yuckies in the water. I have done a bit of back packing with my son in the Boy "Scouts about 30 days a year for 5 years" and was able to sample water from different filters and some filtered the bad taste out of the water. The ultimate would be a filter then the Mioxx just in case of virus. Then where will the water be that you are going to pump?

I think MSR is pushing their filtration system and tablets. Miox is still one of the worlds leading water purification companies, but I may have spoke too soon on getting one.

Seems its not idiot proof...like pumping a handle and dropping in a tablet. You have to understand what brine is and thats what you need to produce your chloride. People didn't understand the salt water mixture needs to be in proper proportion, it must get to the electrolysis unit.

The process is sound and has been in use for years. Miox is the worlds leader providing whole countries with these on a city wide scale. Those units are the size of a house producing thousands of gallons of clean water a minute.

Its going to be hard to find one MSR and REI no longer carry them. Its a specialty item. Its something we, as preppers and survivalist want, but backpackers, hikers and campers don't need. It was a little too advanced for what they wanted. Again it takes a little more smarts too. Several users had a problem. The unit kept flashing the "add salt" light. The user couldn't figure out that the brine wasn't getting into the unit...so the unit kept flashing that Low salt light...there is no, "hey stupid..the transfer hole is clogged so your brine isn't getting into the electrolysis chamber" light. Looks like E-bay is a source as well as possibly ordering direct from Miox. There is a phone number and e-mail on their website.

yeah, thats another thing people didnt realize...it makes the chemical to TREAT your water...it doesnt make water nor does it filter water. This takes the place of Bleach or Iodine, If you are buying Bleach and think it will filter water...we need to talk about some things before you leave on that camping trip.

Yes people did in fact think this made drinking water....

I've looked into several models of portable water filters and have settled on this model that I just purchased yesterday due to majority positive comments from actual users:

            First Need XL

Both are nice for campers and day hiking. For a permanent solution for water needs I see flaws with filtration pump units.

The Miox has the flaw of electronics. Not saying its foolproof, just that its better than a filtration system for long term carry. I owned a Pur for awhile and one day I could no longer buy filters or even parts for it.

My filter system is a PVC pipe, foam, gravel and activated charcoal from a pet store. I am looking for a longer term chemical treatment solution. This Miox maybe it...not as sure as I was...but I am still looking at it as the best go-to so far. I am also now learning how to build an electrolysis device for brine. I maybe able to make my own device.

I have a few of the MIOXs. They work great for me, they purify, not filter, but if you have a filter and MIOX, your good to go. pretty cool device, they are issued by the military now

You need something like a Sawyer Point Zero Two filter.
Browse a full selection of water purification systems to suit every purpose. We offer home water filtration systems, portable water filters, emergency systems & more. Large selection of replacement filters, spare parts and accessories.

You can get these at Amazon or any of a number of retailers.

This filter has been used all over the world in 3rd world countries and disaster zones. Works great for backpacking using a hydration bladder.

.02 micron even filters viruses and bacteria.

And, this filter is cleanable and has a 1 million gallon guarantee.

Make sure you are getting the .02 micron version and not their .1 micron version if you want the virus and bacteria ability.

                    Filters are not purifiers
                    Iodine leaves Crypto
                    filters still leave virus'

Just because its .02 microns and filters Hep doesn't mean it will filter other viruses as small as .005 microns.

UV, boil, chlorine. Thats what you need. Or buy a real purifier.

Don't take my word for it, actually do research instead of listening to people on forums.

Yes, you are correct. Although the average influenza virus is about .12 microns.
Bacteria range in size from 0.2 to 10 microns.

The tiniest Viruses 0.004 to 0.1 microns, Hepatitis A, rotavirus, Norwalk virus and polio. Virues are the least common pathogens found in the wilderness.

Viruses can slip through filters but can be inactavated by boiling. Although, once exposed to the environment, viral particles exhibit a short lifespan and do not reproduce in water as some bacteria do.

So, yes I agree with you. UV, boil or chlorine.

Also, be aware that lots of chemicals can not be filtered out of water with the small filters and boiling, pesticides/herbicides come to mind.

My mobile purification solution includes two steps, filtering and purification. I always keep two types of purification solutions in the bag along with one of the hand filters.

                        Filters
Katdyn Pocket or MSR MiniWorks EX Pro, and coffee filters for pre-filtering

                        Purification
Steripen Journey, MSR MIOX, Potable Aqua+, or lastly, boiling/distillation

I keep the Pocket and Steripen in the INCH bag and the MiniWorks and MIOX in the Bail Out Bag. Each bag has a number of Potable Aqua bottles and sheets as backup in case the batteries run out in the fancy purifiers.

BTW, the Katdyn Pocket and MiniWorks EX are both 0.2 Microns, not 0.02. Check their websites if you are unsure.
                        All things being equal...

                            FYI to all.

Here is an excellent presentation on the Military MIOX System for those who want the full scoop on it. If used properly, it's a great effective system and pretty fool-proof if you use it properly.

                            IWPS Online Power point presentation

IWPS = Individual Water Purification System. I am somewhat familiar with it as I sell the MSR filters and fittings for hydration pack use (shameless plug ) It's easier to read if you hit the full screen button and advance the slide-show from there.

Isnt the sun about 1000x more powerful then that uv pen? Could you just put water in a shallow dish and let it sit in the sun?
