You should find your local Mormon canning center. They have tons of info on what you should have stored away for the amount of people and time you need to feed them.

You will not find a better more friendly place to get info.

We have a huge pantry that has everything we might need for a long time. From TP to food to meds.

Remember you will need everything that is in your kitchen, bath, and laundry room for every family member.

don't plan to survive, plan to flourish.

Stock up on what you eat. Make sure you rotate it well. Just buy a little extra each and every trip. A few more cans of soup, extra bag of rice/beans, peanut butter, crackers, on and on....It a tough time you will want to eat - that which you normally eat. You will eat survival rations when all that runs out.

Stock up enough to get through a first planting of vegetables and first hunt.

My problem is we're trying to eat fresh foods as much as possible. We're especially trying to stay away from foods high in sodium. We don't eat much canned food. I have lots of canned soups and meats in the back of the pantry, but we don't eat it in our normal daily lives.

I think I'm going to stock up on Mountain House packets from Coscto, now that I see what good deals they have. I'll be able to rotate through this stash as I take some for backpacking trips, and they're good for keeping in car kits. The #10 cans are probably a better deal, but I wouldn't rotate through that.

Lots of canned goods (chili, hearty soups, meats, beans, veggies)...

Dry rice, beans, flour, bisquick (vacuum seal and freeze for a week to kill weavel larvae).

Dry pasta and crackers (vacuum seal), peanut butter, coffee beans, spaghetti sauce.

A couple cases of MRE's.

Water, water, water.. A few cases of 1/2 litre bottles, about 20 gallon jugs, a few 5 gallon jugs.

Remember, you have a 40 gallon water tank in your hot water heater.

Mike I would start out with your local Walmart for Mountain House freeze dried food packets. The only draw back with Walmart you have a limited selection menu wise but it's a start. You can also buy canned goods if you have a super Walmart. Canned goods are still good even past their due date as long as the cans are not compromised (bulges, holes, rust). I've eaten canned good food 3 years after the stamped experition dates.

REI, Sports Chalet, Adventure 16 are other sources of Mountain House freeze dried food packets but they charge anywhere for a dollar or two more per packet versus Walmart.

Their prices for freeze dried and dehydrated foods are a bit cheaper that their website. The store front does not ship though. They also sell bulk foods there in 25lb and 50lb sacks plus other goodies.
