    Nor cal offroad camping

I bought a Toyota fj last summer and have not gone on any offroad trails yet
With the weather improving and some time off I'm
Looking to get into some national forest backroads and firetrails
To camp plink and gold pan

Just boughtbackcountry adventures northern california by Massey and Wilson

Anyone gone camping off any of the trails mentioned
Seems to be a ton of area to go exploring

I go to Stanislaus National Forest.
Tons of roads there that are not in the book. Trails everywhere.

Go with another vehicle and carry recovery gear.

Nothing to see here in Butte or Plumas. Don't waste your time.

You should never go offroading alone, go with more than one vehicle, it's a lot funner and safer.

Its perfectly fine to go offroading by yourself. I go exploring all the time. Just use common sense and don`t try anything questionable if your not sure if you can get thru it.

I bought that book when I picked up my jeep JK. I hit up one of their most agressive trails and found it to be little more than just a fire road. If you are looking for a fun camping and light wheeling adventure, you should check out shuteye peak above bass lake.

And this was a side obstacle (the main path is much easier):

Get a El Dorado National Forrest map, There are tons of trails up there, especially in the Ice House area.

Just wait for the snow to melt off and usually there are people 4x4ing up there to help if needed. I have yet to take a trip I didn't wind up finding more people to go along once I got up there.

Pirate is a great source of info. They can get a little rough on noobs, as long as you aren't posting about common sense stuff you will be fine.

This. I honestly believe the majority of miles I have put on off road were done in 2wd. Actually one wheel drive....(dirtbike haha) There are a ton of areas that lead to unexpected places of beauty. From Tahoe all the way to baja.

If you are real new, but somewhat mechanically inclined, and can think calmly in unexpected situations you should be fine. If you would like to test out yourself and your gear while out wheeling, Plan a trip to somewhere like here http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=404 . I haven't been there in quite a few years, it used to be a pretty wild place on weekends but rather mellow during the week.

Consider if your intended camping involves bringing water, or santizing water where you camp, or having a potable water source at the campground.

That said, Plumas NF, Great Lakes Basin has a Gold Lake 4x4 campground. No water available at the site. The road in has at least one tough spot. A stock Nissan Frontier beat its way over. Your FJ has some low plastic that may be iffy.

Sierra NF has the Tamarak Lake - 4x4 trail in. I have not been thru, but it appear easy.

Eldorado NF has different places to camp, and their is the Rubicon Trail, but I'd not suggest taking your FJ over as depending how well you drive it may not be the same after...

The big thing is that these places are very busy in the summer, and on weekends they tend to be like the mall.
The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.

That book isn't all that great, but it should be a good match for an FJ.

There is another one that is spiral bound that has almost all of the trails. Rubicon, Fordyce, Strawberry pass, Deer Creek, Slickrock, Hellhole, Cow Mountain, etc.
